how much fencer????

Buddy just emailed me and asked what I recommend for a fence setup. Going hunting at the northern tip of norway and wants to keep polar bears out of his sleeping bag...... Don't really know what to tell him other than solid wire and a charger that kicks out about 10k volts. They sell those little yellowjackets that use D batteries and put out 3500 volts but don't know if that would serve any purpose. Figure is something that big wants a cookie, a fence wire's not gonna do much good....Peanut butter and tin foil could just make it mad enough to have a man snowcone too...... Guess the best advise would be sleep in the vehicle and keep the food sealed????

Well I can tell You one thing! Mace or pepper spray wouldnt be my first choice... Maybe a bazooka. I have never been impressed with electric fence, & I would think a bear would find that knocking down the posts would solve most of their problems. & thats where most of Yours would begin!!!

He needs to talk with a troop of Boy Scouts on how to camp in bear country. (I'm serious.) Hoist up a food bag, do NOT keep anything in his tent that smells, incluidng ANYTHING that smells. Like deodorant, tooth-paste, anything... Any buy a couple big sprayers of bear spray, on eBay.

Leave the women at home from what I read about bear attacks in the western states in tents. Polar bears hunt man and also eat man from the pics I have seen.

3500 volts ain't squat and sometimes electric fence only works on animals that are trained to it unless you have a pretty substantial fence with multiple wires stretched tight. I think he might consider another strategy. Anyways, I have a small Gallagher S17 portable solar engergizer that puts out about 5000 volts on a single strand of polywire around a 10 acre piece. 5000 is not a whole lot either.

Think I about have him talked out of the fence idea..... told him he'd have money/time better spent on containers to keep his stuff secure and maybe hanging a dummy bag somewhere a little away from camp to distract anything while he sleeps. Kinda like the glass bals that they used to hangoutside cabin doors with purple yarn in them to keep witches busy til daylight

Dave, tell him...

1. Find a hunting partner and pay his way for the hunt. Then tell him you got cooking duty cause I paid yer way. Now have 2 camps close to eaach other with all the food and stuff at the cooks camp........

2. tell him if he dose the above the only other thing he shold do is select someone he can outrun.....he don't have to worry if he can out run the bear......just his buddy!

Don't think he really thought this one thru...... Could even be someone you knew (or knew of). He's a retired CSM and a DAT. Was in the armor unit in Bamberg about the time you were then moved to Schweinfurt to be the CSM of one of the Armor units here. Riggs is his name. Guy from WV and a poster child for a hard headed hillbilly. real good guy tho.

You might want to tell your buddy the real Polar Bears aren't like the ones in the commercials.
They don't actually drink Coke while they sled ride. They don't give you a hug for driving an electric car. Oh, but they WILL "give you a hug"!!!!

I recommend little bells and pepper spray. That way when he turns up missing and they find little bells in polar bear waste that smells like pepper they know what happened to him.

Seriously, camping in bear country miles from civilization is serious business. He needs to set up a defensive camp site, and I'd set a out some alert wires. He wont keep a determined bear out, his best chance is to make sure he wakes up in time to deal with the threat.

When my uncle camped up north, one person was always on watch
with the shotgun. When they came close, fired warning shots.
Sometimes they would see them swimming in to the camp so they
would hit the boats and pull up next to them and dunk the bears
head under water.

The bears would associate humans with drowning and never come
back.

Yea I know who he is, just didn't know him real well. DAT, Dedicated Armor Technician! Bet you didn't know that!

I got to get with my one BIL. He's got pics from a canoe camping trip he too with friends years ago. The made camp one evening and one of his friends had a 357 pistol with for bears. He spread a rag on a rock and started to take the pistol apart to clean it because it had gotted wet. While he had it apart a bear walked into the camp. They got pictures of the bears sniffing the gun parts! The bear walked around a bit and left. They packed up and went a ways before selecting anohter camp site for the night! For the pictures I'd guess it was about a 450 pound black bear. I'm not sure if the guy was planning on trying to take a bear with the 357 or if he was going to shoot himself when the bear grabbed him to spare himself from the pain of being mauled    !

DAT= Dumb A$$ Tanker

I believe that polar bears have hollow hairs and they really need a high powered fencer to shock those shaggy buggers. I don"t thnk 3.5 KV is gonna" do it. It barely works on my cows. Most of my fencers ar 6 to 8.5 KV.

I have always heard a Polar bear is the only animal that will hunt man? They have been known to stay on a humans trail for up to 3 days just to get up with you to eat you !!!!!

Well, if he a nut He should do like I do and stay the ell away from bears I hears they eat nuts and berrys

Wife said something yesterday that got me thinking. He's in his mid 60's but really active. Just never came up with a hairbrained idea like this. She asked if he may be sick and going away to kick off.......... Wouldn't put it past him and could think of worse ways to go. Gonna get him an outfit together and send him on his way.
