4 lafones

I"m working on a early 8N with front mount distributor. It cranks pretty easy but it sounds like it is laboring and it won"t rev up. I"ve checked the timing marks on cam and crank, and rebuilt the carb, I"ve even had a local man look at the distributor. I was wondering if anyone would know why it is doing this????

"4"---just for fun and games, recheck the plug wires. Firing order is 1243 CCW. If that is ok, check to see if the throttle rods are hooked up correctly to the governor.

Long throttle rod to Long arm on Governor.
Short rod from Carb to Short rod on Governor.

Incorrect firing order and governor rods backwards are a common find for the symptoms you have.

If that doesn't work, drop down and visit the discussion forum set up just for the "N" Series Tractor.

Provide a little bit more info on what you have done so far. Did you put in new plugs, plug wires, points, etc? Plugs gapped at .025, points at .015...what brand plugs. Autolite 437's work well.

The more info you provide, the easier it will be to diagnose the problem.

Good luck.

Firing order was done at 1243 CCW. All the rods are hooked up correctly. New plugs (Autolites), haven't replaced the wires but there is good fire on all of the cylinder, gaps are correct....Carb has been rebuilt though this one doesn't adjust well, plan on trying a different one from another tractor tomorrow just to be sure....Had the distributor checked at a local tractor repair shop, reground the valves, checked all the lines and filters, running off of a temporary tank but my flow is good. Compression is good with a 105#, checked the valve lash....

I'm not so much concerned with the revving up as I am about the "laboring", it sounds like the cam is advanced or retarded, one of the two.

lafones........didja know iff'n you use the WRONG 8-32 screw to hold the points on, yer under the plate centrifugal weights won't advance and you won't have power, just as you complain. Make certain your points screw is the SHORT 8-32x3/16 'stedda' of the longer more common 8-32x1/4". It is very eazy to mix the longer condenser screw with the SHORTER 8-32x3/16" points screw. ........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
