Have 22 acres of alfalfa, next year wiull be 3rd year. Pocket Gophers have made cutting hay H3LL. I can rent an older pull type gopher poisener. I am wondering if any one knows the best way to do this. How far apart do you make passes, how deep. Is one poisen better than another. They are digging and making piles like crazy right now. Place to rent the machine is a equip dealer, no advice from them on anything other than rental price. Been so busy with fencing, now I have to get these gophers killed off before I need to start on harvest, and hunting.

I used to trap them just for the challenge. Find a fresh digging, dig out the hole, put a small 0 or 00 steel jump trap down there, stake it, lay a board over the hole and cover it up with dirt completely so it looks like the original mound. If you do it right you'll have a caught a very angry gopher with nasty teeth, if you do it wrong the trap will be stuffed full of dirt. I usually had 50% luck. Takes a few years to get them all.Jim

LOL Jim you can come on up and tackle these Mn gohpers! Guy traps my place and get 150 or so a year off of 100 acres. Every year, don't seem to make a dent in em.

I'm kinda interested in the poison thing too. I'd just like to get rid of em.

I'd say there is a hundred plus on this 22 acre peice. Hauled round bales off today and couldnt believe my eyes. Little suckers are busy.

I've got a poison probe. Just hit the fresh ones, doesn't take too long. Seems to slow them down quite a bit. You'll never get them all.

Contacrt the local youth firearms instructor. Get some kids out there with .22's
Neighbor kids 12-10-8 killed everyone on this 50 acre plot within a few years. Saw one this spring!

Rodenator!! I recently hayed the field of a friend who dislikes wood chucks and found a good batch of new holes. I called him and told him he needed a Rodenator. I described it to him and he agreed that the needed one. But after looking at them on line he said that he could build one for a quarter the price and I know that he can. So soon we will be running the few survivors into the next county.

The county here used to sell small bags of poisined oats or barley. It worked good but the government banned the use of the strichnine so that is no more.

years ago our Husky Mix wiped out the ground hogs 1/2 mile around us in every direction. She was a killing machine. But, she's gone and they are coming on again. A good dog is a real gem.

hawks don't do anything for them??????? Pretty much everywhere you look here there are perches about 20ft tall sticking around fields/meadows. don't see many rodents....

Dave2 Pocket gophers spend very little time above ground so birds of prey don't get many. Up here in MN we have an abundance of bald and golden eagles, hawks and owls. Plus coyotes, fox, and other Small predators. Don't seem to make a dent in the pocket gophers.

From what I've witnessed the birds of prey are opportunity hunters. They take what gives em the best opportunity! Saw a golden eagle take a half grown gosling and a big hawk take a small skunk just in the last couple of years. But like most preditors they take whats easyest. If they move into an area with a large rabbit population they will take the rabbits before small rodents. I think because they are easyer to spot and it provides several days food rather than a snack.
