OT pinion nut fell off

So my best friend has an 01 Dodge 2500 Cummins with a Dana 80 rearend. The pinion nut fell off and the pinion slid into the rearend and scarred up the case. My question is can we just put everything back together with a new nut or is he going to need a rebuild?

First, that's the first time that I have ever heard of that happening! Unless someone had recently worked on it. Second, it must be a different design from most Dana's that I have seen, because I didn't think the pinion could work back that far. That being said, the scarred case should not be a problem, however, I would closely examine everything and make sure there are no chipped teeth or other damage. If it has high miles, would be a good time to replace bearings, etc.

The pinion is wider than the ring gear (Hypoid or spiral bevel). If the pinion got into the differential carrier, there are bound to be other serious damage. Every tooth (ring and pinion)must be inspected for issues, every bearing for brenelling damage from floating metal flakes.
I can imagine replacing every bearing and both ring and pinion, and maybe the yoke if it ran loose for any time at all. If you are a differential setup capable person you might not ask us these questions (with respect). It is not a device that can be "put together" Jim

just as jim says, once its come loose its junk in plain english. complete o/h or find another differential from auto wrecker.

if you have a pinion in one hand, and a pinion in the other hand, what do you have......a difference of a pinion...sorry had to put humor some where,,lol

Pinion didn't have to move BACK much. Loose yoke allowed front bearing to move forwards, allowing pinion shaft to cock to the side, away from the ring gear and hit the case.
