another chimney post

Yesterday SM Himrod asked about chimney fires. I am starting to 'tune up' the oil burning furnace. I noticed smoke coming fron an old coal burning damper under the 12inch stovepipe, while back there, for the first time ever, I opened the clean out for the oil burner chimney,I always keep an eye on the wood burning chimney, never this one. Oh my. dirty. Ok, just clean it, fish it all out. and out and out. No end to this @#$%. So took off the stovepipe... a hole in the soot about the size of a pack of cigarettes... and solid. What a miserable rotten 6 hour job. 2 garbage cans full to the brim. Nothing uphill from the pipe, as I cleaned the wood one from the roof, I would always look down this one, always clean all the way down.... just not far enough down huh? So now, so far, the burner seems to run steadier, the flapper flaps again, and no smell of oil anymore. So don't neglect the oil - or even gas chimneys either, btw, the house was built in 1945, and I bet I am the first one to ever clean it......

Sorry-was not my chimney fire post. For the record though I do burn wood in an outside forced air unit. Around 6-8 cord a winter. I will burn a very hot hot fire once a week to burn out the chimney. Seems to do the trick. Your situation sounded like fun-yuck. SHON

Now I see what I did wrong, sorry Sunny! Yep, this is the most fun I had since the dog died. Glad it's over, and will certainly make sure it doesn't build up like this again. Going to mark it on my 2076 calender...

Reminds me of the guy who thought he could go "one more winter before he cleaned his chimney",The fire chief stated "well its clean now!" that from Mike Perry's CD "never stand behind a sneezing cow" I think a lot of folks on this forum would enjoy his sense of humor. Bill M.

also has a CD about old trucks.

I got to see a oil stove fire one time, the chimney had a 90 in it, the fire got so hot the pipe grew, distorted and let hot gases out into the house setting the room behind the stove on fire.

Many people don't do any furnace maintenance for some reason.

Santa huh? Just happen to live in reindeer country? In that case, with the ...'> 4 <'.... new Perkins pistons... throw down a few cases of Carling Black label... pick it up at the brewery outlet as you fly over Ontario.... gee thanks Stanta!
Does this mean I have to be good the rest of the year? @#$% !!!!

I cleaned 1 kitchen trash can full of wood soot out and 1 can full of starling nests. Those suckers are like beavers with wings. Very dangerous fire hazard too.
