Not trying to be funny at all, but she'd do better to make the horse "gate friendly"... Doesn't take much and may be already there..... took a little doing but I can ride up to a pole barrier, raise it over my head, and go under/lower it on the other side....
If it's the latch giving her problems on an existing gate, I have a book with a horseman latch (so it's called) that looks pretty simple to make. If you want, I'll see if I can find it.

almost every AQHA show trail pattern has a gate to open, pass thru and close. The latches are usually just a rope looped over the end post. The key to a "horse-rider" freindly gate is one that opens in both directions. That way there's really no backing involved. A horse that can back and side pass is always a plus in gate situations...
Most "horse friendly" latches that I've used can be opened by a horse- creating escapees! We settled with a foot of cheap chain and a $1.00 carabiner into a post mounted eye. Mount it high on the post, so you don't have to bend to far!

mosinee dave, A simple piece of 5/8 oilfield sucker-rod run through a 3/4 pipe, weld the pipe near the top of the gate @ or near a 45*angle across the top and side of the gate and drill an appropriate size hole in the gate post, at the correct angle for the rod to slide into.
This set up is how most West Texas, High Plains, Western US, Corral, Feedlot, pasture gates are done. At least in area where horses are used to a larger extent than a man on foot. Hope this helps!

PS. No need for a locking mechanism for gravity will keep the rod in place, in the hole on the gate post.
