o/t electric fencer question

i have 5 wire smooth wire high tensile fence
i have a fencer question that is driving me crazy.
the light on the fencer doesn"t light up but if i check fence with test light it will light up.
my question is why would the fencer not light up.

That indicates that you have a short or bad ground. Walk the fence and check yer gounds. Could also be that you have too much wire for the rating on the fencer.

Or could just be the light don't work. Unhook the + fence wire and see if you get a light.

The test light you are using most likely is not rated for giving you a range of kilovolts for the fencer. Providing the indicator light is working correctly that usually indicates a shorted or heavily loaded fence. You need a volt meter specifically designed for electric fence and preferably a fault finder also.

I'm inclined to think ground fault at the fencer. It could be connection, wire to ground, or ground itself. What brand energizer, type of wire to ground, type and length of ground rod?

I do quite a bit of 4 and 5 wire high tensile as a contractor for cost share programs. Gallagher brand is all I've been using the last 3 years, and doing it to their specs. One of the things that they no longer recommend is using any copper wire in the system. All galvanized, including the ground rod and clamp. Cuts down on bimetallic corrosison so they say. Makes sense to me, and I have fewer problems on my own that follow their designs perfectly than the ones I cobbled together over the years. I really like their directional testers too, tells actual volts, direction to fault, and fault type. They are expensive at 100 bucks but a worthwhile lifetime investment if you plan on having much electric fence.

my little brother and myself built our own trainer fencer for some stubborn cattle one time we took a coil and used a turn signal flasher as a set of points it worked really good need a solar operated battery charger though it would drain a battery in 24 hours those cattle never got out and we had about 4 miles of fence. very cheap fencer.

Many old fencers use an incandesant light or neon light.Check that first. Some new fencers will eat test lights.
