OT Pallets for firewood

I don't burn them myself but I've got a neighbor that has a seemingly endless supply of them from where he works. Most of the ones I've run across are oak so why not? The only downside I see is that the ashes tend to have nails in them but in the case of my neighbor he made himself about a 30" square box with mesh in it that he dumps the ashes through and gets all the nails out for scrap.

I've burned em in my shop stove(nails and all)-keeps the broken ones cleaned up.easy to'prosess' too,use a'skilsaw'-takes about 30 seconds.I also save all my used oil filters to burn(one or two a day) during the winter.Steve

I always wanted to build a stove with a door 48" high by 16" wide so you could just throw a whole pallet in on edge.

Somebody makes a pallet wood stove but the intent might be to load a pallet then set it in. Amish here cuts hardwoods for pallet stock.

Recycle price here is excellent on pallets. See them roped to the tops of cars going to be sold.

I worked as a RR carman for a while and we burned them in the winter in 55 gal drums to keep warm. Broke them up with a sledge. Worked good. joe-

I get pallets every year when I get wood pellets delivered to my house.
I used a chainsaw to cut the small planks off the runners, oak too. I throw the runners out because there are nails in them. The small planks burn nice in a firepit.

I bring some home from work when they're too broken up to use, or just have too many.
Jobsites accumulate pallets quickly and they take up too much dumpster space.
I burn them in the basement woodstove, nails go out with the ashes.

My Grandpa heated his house for years with pallets. There was a pallet reconditioning company close. Anything they didn't fix or broken boards they did went out for free. There was pretty much an endless supply. He sifted the ashes and saved the nails for scrap.

Thanks for the replies. I get an endless supply from a building siding manufacturer. They receive coils of steel on them , there steel comes from the east coast and the pallets are oak very heavy.Usually a pallet consists of two 3"x4"x4'pieces and four 1"x8"x32"pieces. So far this year I have cleaned and cut up 330 pallets. It's a lot of work but it's oak and theres no bark to clean up.

I burn pallets at the shop all the time, a friend builds new pallets and always has to haul off his suppliers old ones. I have best luck using a circurlar saw to cut them up instead of chain saw. In process building new wood stove so wont have to cut them up any more. They sure put off good heat. My 2 cents worth.

I burn oak pallets in my Ashley fireplace insert with no problems, easier to cut them up with the skill saw than it is to go to the woods with a chainsaw and work youself to death. Also burn pallets made from poplar for heat as well. As others have said I leave the nails in the wood and just dump them with the ashes when I clean the heater out.
