I recently purchased a 1968 jd 3020 gasser. It has a REAL thirst for engine oil. slight to medium blue smoke out of exhaust pipe when i throttle up. When running it smokes a little sometimes or not at all. It never smokes heavy when running. Any thoughts most appreciated, what can i try or whats the fix . blue in michigan,

Sounds like valve seals. Unless you're buying enough oil to keep the Bin Laden's happy, I'd do a compression test and see how close she is to spec before doing a rebuild.

You might be able to put new valve seals on without pulling the head. It is always better to error on the side of caution before spending a bunch of money.

Leaky valve seals will definitely cause the blue smoke, but usually does not cause enough actual oil consumption to hardly notice.

Sounds to me like that 3020 is just slap worn out, and nothing short of a complete engine rebuild, sleeves, pistons, the whole works, is going to cure it.

only cheap fix might be marvel mystery oil or lucas additive, but not really a fix---could get you down the road a little longer, but might delay too long and have more expensive rebuild to do.

I assume you did change the engine oil and filter..??
If not, I would...just to see if anything changes..
A quart of Rislone in the oil may free-up some stuck rings and clean out the crankcase some..
With cooler weather upon us, it would be good to leave it in all winter..

william, I too! agree with DeltaRed and rustyfarmall. First do a Compression test,1st time without adding any oil to the cylinders, 2nd time add oil and look at the difference in the compression #s. That should tell you most of what you need to know. weather the rings are bad or is it the valves. Hope this helps!
