It has 125000 miles on it .stock plugs as far as I know, When it warms up and you step on the gas it sputters? Needs a tune up?

pulled the plugs on one just like it, with 130xxx plug gap only 3 thoundends wider than recomended. not fun to change either, I'd have codes checked first.

DTC will probably indicate that cylinder X is misfiring or PO304. It could be a COP, coil on plug,or a plug itself or most likely the injector on that cylinder. Ford had some bad injectors and if that is the problem they will replace it for free.

Start with plugs . Be ready for long hard battle . Follow rec ford proceedure so as not to break any off, which may happen anys . Use only OEM plugs! See coils packs go bad on these alot . usually caused by worn plugs . $300-400 to replace plugs ! be prepared .

Tuneups went out with highbutton boots..... Just follow the service chart/intervals in the owners manual. Have you tried the simple stuff like changing gas (maybe putting some drygas in the tank if you haven't been keeping the tank full)..... before dumping the bucks to it? Think if I wasn't sure how old the plugs/wires are that I'd change them along with cap and rotor.

Good Luck.

Dave

COP is a common problem. I've got a 5.4 that's a bit older than yours and when the AM radio is on a bad COP caused radio interference that was related to engine speed. The miss was especially obvious under load. When one goes bad it's pretty common for others to follow.

Plugs are a bit of a pain but doable. It helps to undo the fuel rail on the drivers side and lift it out of the way.

Dealer will cost you about a Grand to fix. New plugs and one or two coils(If I had the money I would replace them all and forget the scan tool.)

The 5.4 had a tendency for coils failing. It always seemed to be the same coil. I think they shared a coil between cylinders. I had that happen.

Early had two coils , each fed 4 cylinders , later has one coil on each plug . High secondary resistance will make them short lived .

my wifes 4.6 Expedition had the same problem. I replaced the coils and plugs and it went away. By the way, the coils can be purchased on ebay for about 100.00 for all 8. Yes, that is right and mine have been in for a couple years problem free. good luck.
