what oil do i use in the engine of a 1951 ford 8n the book said sae 20, is that a nondetergent oil?or should i put in a detergent oil in it sae 20?

15W-40 is what I run in all my old engines.
Lubricants have advanced as much as anything else since that tractor was built.

back in 1951, there were not many choices. Today there are hd oils designed for tractors.

use a 15w-40 hd oils.. chevron delo, mobile delvac, or shell rotella will all work well.

Non detergents should only be used in poured babbit bearing engines... the kind that you pour hot babbit into the bearings.

Any good grade/brand of oil is fine. Non-detergent NO. You can run a depending on where you are a 30W or a 5W-30 or 10W-40 or a 20W-50 as the others say oil back then is not oil now days

15-40 is used for diesel engines and ok in gas.
diesel oils are higher in detergent . you may want to us your ordinary automotive oil like 10-30 or 10-40 since its a gas tractor.

After looking at some cold viscosity figures I not sure that 15/40 is a good choice. It is thicker than 30 weight at 40 degrees.20/50 is worse.

If it has an oil filter..then it should run
detergent oil. Detergent oil IS NOT like soap,
that will "Foam", per the old wives tales, but
rather, holds the dirt in suspension until it
reaches the filter, where it is taken out.
