OT getting hay to texas

My dad and I have about 150-200 4x5 rolls of good mixed grass hay we were gonna try to sale someone to texas who needs it. Any information on how to go about getting in contact with a farmer who needs it and finding someone to haul it. Thanks jordan

You might think about going to Texas and buying cattle. It's way cheaper to haul the cattle to the hay, than to haul the hay to the cattle.

Jordan.
Can you provide an zip code or phone number? Also it would help potential buyers to know if the hay is fert or unfert and what type field it came out of. There's some roadside grass being baled and sold in Texas.

A neighbor of mine is sending hay to Texas. He contacted a church and they put him in contact with local members that needed hay. All his hay is being donated and the texas ranchers just pay the shipping.

If you are looking to sell hay (hopefully at the same rate you sell locally) you could try contacting any feed store or church in texas.
A call to your local county agent could put you in touch with a texas county agent.
Contacting any cattle association in texas.
You could get any of this contact info from a google search.
I am sure any of the above know ranchers that need hay.

Remember they are buying this hay site unseen. They need any info about the quality of the hay you can give them.

Don't Texas ranchers buy most/all of their hay normally? Why would it be any different this year than any other, that they need "donations" of hay?

Sure, hay is more expensive this year but that's the risk you take in the cattle business. Both hay and cattle are commodities, and prices can fluctuate wildly depending on supply, demand, economic trends, the phase of the moon, how much whiskey the traders drank the night before... and you're at the mercy of it all.

I just don't think it's fair to you to lose out on potential income to help out people who in reality aren't any worse off than you are.

WTH??? Have you been down here lately?

I agree with the Extension Agent route. They probably already have, or can get easily, all teh contact info.

Back in the mid to late 90's, a couple of farmers up her wanted to donate a couple loads of hay to help Texas out. It kind of snowballed and the whole area got involved. A local company said they would supply the semi's and drivers if fuel was covered for the trip down (they could get paying loads coming back). A couple of churches had some quick fund raisers to pay for the fuel. Donations were coordinated........ I think they ended up with 4 or 5 semi loads going down. It was all set up through the Co Ext Office and was pulled of in just a couple of weeks.

Good luck,

Tim

I'll sum it up in a simple question: Why do Texas ranchers need hay *donated* when they buy ALL their hay from out of state normally?

It's been a bad hay year for EVERYONE, not just Texas.

I was talking to a friend yesterday. His family has a farm up near Centerville. They normally get 175-200 round bales per year; this year they got 37. Two of our ag teachers have farms, and both have sold most of their cattle. The cost of hay is prohibitive, if any can be found.

In a normal year we don't buy hay from out of state. We grow our on. I live in Centerville and know two guys who bale hay for a living. Most of the time they bale six days a week and can't keep up. This year together they have a total of one weeks worth of baling done. Now they are doing what ever they can just to pay the bills. I can show you pastures that last year produced over two hundred bales. This year I think they may have produced twenty.

mkirsh...my momma taught me its better to remain silent and appear foolish, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt...you obviously aint got a clue about anything concerning Texas.

While ranchers in west texas may buy hay from out of state we are talking about ranchers in east and central texas. In a normal year they grow all the hay they need to last threw the winter. They do not feed hay during the summer because the cows are on pasture.

This year all the pastures have dried up so they do not have enough grass to support a cow with grazing much less have some over to cut for hay.
They have been selling off the cows at reduced prices because of the market glut or feeding hay all summer.

There is a guy up the road from me that has no cows of his own. He cuts and sells hay in the summer and has yankee yearlings that graze rye grass over the winter on a pound gained fee.
This year he has no hay for sale because they moved in so many texas cows. The texas rancher had a choice of selling his cows or hauling in hay from out of state. He choose to move his cows to the greener grass we have. Time he pays for hauling and grazing his cows on someone else’s pastures there will be a major loss but at least he still has his herd to move back home when things change.

Things are so dry fires are starting in the highway neutral ground because someone was dragging a trailer chain; or had a flat tire and ran on the rim to the next exit.

I pray you are never in a situation like these texas farmers are in now and need donated hay.

The zip is 36260. Phone is 256-473-2686 cell and home phone is 256-831-4621. I can be reached during the week after 6 cst. the hay is unfet. mixed grass(johnson, dallas, bermuda, broom grasses). The fields were row croped about 20 years ago and now are hay fields. 25 a roll plus whatever shipping is.

4x5's are going $30-$35 in the field in Central Louisiana. I'll check with my father and see if the 200 or so bales he is currently baling still have a buyer. I know it is for sale.
