That time of year again. Can buy carrots for a couple bucks for 50 pounds
and potatoes cheep also. Carrots are only for the horses but I like tators.
Ideal temp and moisture level for longest storage (without shrivelling)? and should they be stored in the 50 pound net/bag or layed out?

Washed or left dirty?

Same ???'s for feed and sugar beets...

Have a basement under the barn that stays between 35 and 50 degrees but high (80-90%) moisture. Anything I can do with it to make it a root storage area?

Thanks, Dave

That should work fine. we had a basement under part of our laying house that Dad had used for a hatchery in the 30's. About the same temperature wise, but I never checked humidity. We kept potatoes, apples, carrots, etc. all winter in it. This was in North Central Ohio.

When I was young we used to store taters in a sawdust filled wooden box on the enclosed back porch. Never got cold enough to freeze but kept the taters cold

My mom used to say they stored potatoes in wooden kegs full of dirt in the root cellar. They left carrots in the garden, under straw until it started to freeze, then moved them to dirt barrels also.

Good luck,

Tim
