Here in Idaho school districts start at different times. Our district started August 17th. Others started today. Our district still lets school out for 2 weeks in September for potato harvest. they will only get a few days out at Christmas where some other districts don"t do harvest but will have longer Christmas etc.

Ladysmith, WI.... always started Aug. 10-15 when I was in school. My oldest son started kindergarten last Thurs., Sept. 1.

School in Maury County, Tennessee, started before the end of July. They call it "Year Around School" but the fact is they have about 8 weeks off in the summer. Since the State and the Feds are holding the school systems much more accountable for performance, the local school district here is really scrambling to improve their test scores.

Missouri the Lake of the Ozarks area school started on Aug. 18th. Years ago there was talk about making it so school would not start till after Labor day but it did not get voted in

You can't let your kids ride on the tractor to school! Children under 18 years of age must stay in the manure spreader while the tractor is moving. My daughter starts school at the university of my kitchen table. She use to drive my 8N until my wife sold it. I say, "My wife", because she sold it for a mere $200.

Here in NC school started on a Friday two weeks back. Why waste time and money starting on Friday instead of waiting til a Monday...I don't know....maybe it just makes sense....... To make things even crazier kindergarden goes the one day that week and then takes several days off before going back. Top it all off with a school board that can't make up their mind when the school day starts for the trifecta. They went from a system where the school system all started at the same time to one where elementary starts at one time, middle school at another, and high school at still another. After two years of really screwing people over by having the elementary kids start so late that they had to go to daycare in the morning so the parents could get to work on time they finally realized (((( or people, like me, b!tched enough and told them how stupid their idea was enough that it finally sank in))) that the older kids could stay home alone til the bus picked them up at 8:30 or so, and got the younger kids on the bus by 7 in time for the parents to go to work.

This whole staggerd start time deal was supposed to "save" them around $400,000 a year by allowing them to run fewer busses, etc. Of course they were going to spend all of the 'savings' to get camera systems on the busses like the cops have in their cars to moniter the kids. Personally I say if they act up kick their little a$$es off and don't let them back on. If the parents have a problem with it let them figure it out for themselves how to get the brats to school and maybe when they take the initiative to kick the kids a$$ when the act up there won't be any more problems. In reality all I see the staggerd start times doing is wearing the older, more easily repairiable buses out sooner making them buy new, 'green' buses at a premium price that now have to have additional (higher cost) maintenance, urea fluid support, etc, etc. Too the whole situation also makes the kids miss more days of school because the time the busses have so spend on the road is now so long that they are afraid to even think about having school if the forcast even mentions a minute chance of snow.............Oh well, that's our elected officials hard at work 'saving' our hard earned tax money for us....

hell it's been fourty years ago, didn't even go to reunions, because i wasn't a jock! can't remember going to school sober the last year.lol

Back when I was a kid, and up until just a few years ago, school never started around here(North Central Nebraska) until after Labor Day. Now, though, they've moved it up...school started this year on the 16th of August....heck...with the wet spring/early summer we had here, we'd just got started really rolling on the haying...My son's 17 now and is proving to be a VERY good hand in the hayfield....too bad we had to lose him to school but that's the way it goes. According to the radio, the "starting school late so kids could work" doesnt exist anymore since...well...I forget why...uh-huh...ok....

ONE reason is why all this happens- sports...highschool sports has become big business around here and they want those kids to get all they can get...our football team started practice the 2nd of August...Now, I have nothing against highschool sports...I think it's good for the kids...but when it becomes the main thing that schools are interested it, BEYOND education, then it's gone way too far. I have a daughter who's a freshman..14 years old...who plays volleyball. She's gone now at least two nights a week...up to 150 miles away from the school, with another 40 miles to come home when she gets back with the team....is this helping her eduaction??? I kinda doubt it.....

Minnesota schools started yesterday, the Tuesday after Labor Day. Parents are rejoicing.

Starting day is set by law, to help the vacation resort businesses. The State Fair also ends on Labor Day.

Both of minewent back the 16th of Aug. in SC. There is one district who didnt start until yesteday due to the new schools in that district not getting done on time. They, the news and people around here, keeps sayig we need to wait until after Labor day, and how they use to do it, but I swear I dont remember that!!

When I was in school, the starting day was always day after Labor Day. Somehow the start date started slipping further forward, until the legislature stepped in and set day after L D as the official start day. This was done primarily at the behest of the tourist industry, who wanted to wring out the last few weekends of summer from as many people as they could. (Michigan)

Always been day after Labour day here in Ontario. Always kinda surprised me to see schools starting beginning of August or Mid August.

Rural West Tennessee. Until the late '60s, when the powers-that-be decided it was better to bus all the kids to town, there was a (grades 1-8) school in each community. They started mid-July; went to school for 6 weeks; got out 6 weeks to pick cotton and started back 'for good' mid-October. Now they all start the 1st week of August.

They were to start the last week of August here in MD, but the remnants of Irene delayed the startup for 2 days since a lot of traffic lights were out and roads closed from fallen trees. One tree even fell on the Baltimore Gas & Electric's truck. We've had 14 inches of rain since the 7th of August. Bone dry in June and July. Calling for more rain thru next Monday.
Our power was off for 15 hours, but I had the generator on standby that kept the refrigerator, freezer and sump pump working. Hope we don't get that much snow this Winter. Hal

Granddaughter started the 17 of Aug. 60 years ago it was half day on labor day and was out the 20 or 21 of April. This was at a one room school house though.

Lets see, anything good about the schools......To be honest given the massive changes over the years, and the constant, mindless changes over the past couple of years, I can't say I honestly know of very many good things about the system as a whole. Having raised one special needs child and watch him go through the system for 5 years and now watching my daughter from kindergarden to 3rd grade, all I can say is there are some really great teachers out there, and fortunately they do seem to outnumber the not so good ones........
