Seams like I am the only one in the community with a large rotary brush mower. The local cemetery in our community is maintained by the community people. I have been donating my time for quite a few years now. Doesn't take long. and don't mind doing it. While I was there I stopped by and said hello to Mom, and Dad. Any one else live in a community where the locals maintain their own cemetery? Stan

I wish I was a bit closer to where my son was burried. Its about an hour drive by tractor one way on a main state road. Would be happy to do it. The fella doing it now is pretty good, no one complains.

Our cemetery hires the basic mowing done, volunteers fill in sunken graves and trim the boundaries.

I maintain live plants on my great grandmother's, grandparents', uncles', parents' and my son's graves during the summer. My friend's Dad is buried in between my family graves and I always say "HI" to him as I pass by. When I mention this to my friend he gets a sick look on his face. Not quite sure if that is to say I'm a NUT for honoring his Dad or if he just can't deal with it and NEVER stops out there!

The only problem I have is Relatives giving me advise on howto mow and what to mow with. Thay never offer to help. Is a private family plot. on private land. I have to tralior tractor 45 miles one way but some has to do it.

I used to do quite a few jobs like that. Three years ago most town roads had a tree across every 30 feet or so due to an ice storm. I cleared about a half mile, keeping a careful watch for downed wires, pedestrians, pets etc. I also used to do all the tractor work for about 50 acres of town hay ground for nothing. The town selectmen passed a resolution for two million liability insurance for contractors including volunteers. My ins. agent quoted me $200.00 extra so I had to quit doing that stuff.

In my small Town, we have small old cemeterys.
For the past Ten or so years my DAD (he will be 91 next month) has mowed and trimmed 3 of them. Each one is about a half acre in size.
Over the years he has streightened and repaired many grave stones, and cut a lot of brush to make them look nicer.
No pay, he just does it for the pride he gets out of it.

The cemetery where most of my recent ancestors are buried has a local guy that mows the grass, but most of the other work is volunteer. Now that I'm retired I have done quite a bit, tree removal, new fence, etc. We have talked about leveling some markers but that hasn't gotten done yet.

Thanks for the work you do to maintain the resting place of many. As one who has ancestors buried in many different locations such effort is greatly appreciated.

At my hometown cemetery care is provided by the township. They hire a maintenance employee. The cemetery board sees that it is kept in excellent condition.

The linked photo from 2008 shows that the tombstones have not had clipping done around them which is unusual.

Most all of the grass is buffalo grass which grows slowly in all but the wettest years.

Kudos to the cemetery board for the upkeep.

Used to mow about 8 acres for a local church. Free. Once a year they give me maybe 100 for gas. Got new congregation, do it themselves. What I was cutting, they take 8 youngsters to do. Can't win. Fun while it lasted maybe 4 years. Dave
