I have been leasing 2 fields to a local tobacco farmer for the past 10 years. One field is about 7 acres, and the other one is 4. My question is: Would it be profitable to plant winter wheat in either or both of these fields this year and borrow or rent a combine and dump truck to haul the grain? I have the equipment to bale the straw. I haven't got a seed drill either, but I have had a lot of success spreading wheat seed for food plots with a fertilizer spreader and lightly discing it under. Keep in mind that I make $120 per acre off the lease, and that my soil is sandy. Thanks for any help!

Had 186 acres that made $ 491.76 per acres with Out of the pocket expenses , seed , fertlize, chemicals, fuel, some where around $ 293.00 per acre but then you have to add wear and tear on equipment. I would think you are better off keepin your sure thing. Never know about the weather or the price of wheat. This was probably the best year I have had on wheat ever and I have been doing it over 30 years.

I would have to really sit down and put the pecil to it before I gave up a definate profit off the land. Even bailing the straw Im not sure after you pay for the help bailin, custom hauling, harvesting, fertilizer and chemical how much profit youll make. Not to metion how long the straw mite sit in the barn before you can sell all of it. Broadcast spreading is not a really good way to grow wheat. Its not very consisitent and not gonna produce a very good stand. Most guys that broadcast spread wheat are only doing it as a cover crop situation at least here where I live anyway. the other thing to consider is what are you gonna do with the land after the wheat is cut and the straw is bailed?
