O/T F250 only moves in reverse

I've got a '91 F250. Years ago I had the transmission rebuilt. Today, I stopped on a hill to pick up a few bales of hay that fell off. When I started it up, it would not go forward. Reverse works fine. I backed down the hill, got it on the level, put it in "L" and after reving it up, it began to move forward. Thinking maybe it was working again, I backed it into the country road, put it in Drive, nothing...put it in low, nothing. It reved up like it was in neutral. It works fine in reverse. Checked the transmission fluid, it's on the mark.Any ideas...

Id say the tranny went out on ya, did the fluid smell burnt at all? If it did thats would be your problem. Normall when a tranny fails you will still have atleast one gear, sometimes reverse, and sometimes one of the forward gears. What tranny is in it, if it is the AOD that is fords biggest pos, if the tranny fluid wasnt burnt id say that the modulator valve may have went bad on it, thats on the tranny on the passenger side by the back side of the pan, sometimes the vacuum line comes un hooked from it, and other times it just goes bad, take and look at it, if its unhooked hook it back up and should go, if its still hooked up, pull the hose off of it and see if it has tranny fluid in it, if it does, the modulator valve is bad, about 16 buck for one at the parts store. Since it is an F250 the transmission is probably a E4OD and the place where I would look is the Manual Lever Position Sensor. When you stopped you shifted to park then when you wanted to go again you shifted back into drive the MLPS sends a signal to the ECM (computer) telling it what gear you have selected. The ECM then sends the appropriate signal to the solenoid body in the transmission. See if the MLPS is all grunged up. It is the electrical switch mounted at the lever on the driver side of the transmission just about the pan rail.

Had the same thing happen to me one time with a heavy load of bulls. All was well until I stopped and then it never moved again. Groan!

Sure sounds like a forward clutch, doesn't it?

Especially that part about manual low working once when ya revved it up. Confirming that the low gear's deep reduction just finished the job of taking out the forward clutch. :>(

Should have added,

Reverse doesn't use that forward clutch so it stands to reason that reverse would still work okay.

Hi ol' Pard!

Sure don't wanna be argumentative, but that's not how a modulator works.

Only failing symptom is either "shifting" issues or if ruptured, the engine will smoke like a bug fogger because it is burning transmission oil.

If disconnected, on the other hand, the engine will show signs of a miss and the transmission won’t wanna upshift, but only in the drive position.

Just another one of those old wives' tales started from who knows where. They simply cannot cause catastrophic engagement or ‘no-move’ problems.
