Farm tire rim - hole repair size

I'm going to be replacing a tire on a water wagon tomorrow. It's a Farm tire 9.5L-15 and the hole in the rim for the tube is all rusted out to at least 1" square. I'm planning to weld a patch and then drill a new hole elsewhere on the rim before I head over to the tire dealer. I know lots of you guys have patched rims like this before. Can anybody tell me what the proper hole size is?

I guess I cheat I just weld a washer over the hole and be done with it. I have used 2 or 3 stacked if needed but that works well and not need to drill a new hole

Thanks old, I never thought of just using a washer. Good idea. In fact, you're one of the guys I was hoping would post, as I know you've repaired rims in the past. I'll go out to the shop and see if we've got a 5/8" washer that will cover the area. Maybe a weld washer. The area is pretty rotten, so I'm not sure how big a patch I need until I put a grinder to it to get to solid metal.

I would get the tube and measure the stem. Mine was 1/2". I put a large patch on the back side of the hole on mine and drilled a new hole elsewhere on the rim in a more solid spot.

I just had a rim repaired by patching the old hole and drilling a new hole. The size for a tube valve stem was 5/8".

I had a tractor front rim that was rusted around the valve stem hole. I welded a washer in the hole and welded the hole solid. Then I drilled a new hole 180 degrees from the original hole.

There are two sizes of valve stems. 1/2" and 5/8". I used the bolt on type of valve stem that fit a 1/2" hole (tubeless).
