electrical converted to 12 volt using resister w/ 6volt coil. could that cause my 871 to die and act totally electrical dead then all of a sudden start again. often happens when humidity is high.

if i go to 12v coil do i just remove resister and connect the wires ?

what coil would i use

One like that can be caused by many things. A simple loose wire some place. A ballast resister going bad. An ignition switch going bad. Even a coil but not as likely since they when hot start to make an engine spit and sputter then dies. As for a true 12 volt coil helping maybe maybe not unless you first find the root problem.

With a 12v coil, just remove the resistor, connect directly to the coil, and go. Your experienced NAPA dealer should be able to advise you as to the 12v coil to replace your 6v unit. Your current coil MAY be the reason for the sudden stopping, as it heats, something comes uncontacted. However, it may not be the probelm either.

When it dies, immediately get out of the seat, pull a plug wire and VERIFY that you have spark at one of the plugs. Should be bright bluish-white and jump at least 5/16".
No tools required.
If you have spark go to a possible fuel issue.
No guessing, no hunches.

Won't crank?

That's different.

Verify that the battery terminal connections are clean and tight on both ends.
