anyone getting ready to plant this fall in texas or olka?i disced up maybe four acres in western last week and it just turned to dust,no sign of moisture at all.I just put the tractor back in barn.i'm not sure wheather to get ready or just leave the old wheat stubble standing to help control dust, and see if we get any moisture before spring.i dont think theres enough moisture to even sprout wheat here.anybody seen any long term forcasts?

last forcast i read late fall maybe november only other hope is a gulf storm.and i am on the gulf coast.

Two weeks ago we were repairing some fence. Set 3 posts about 3 ft deep. On 2 of the 3, ground was powder all the way down. On the 3rd, ground showed very slight moisture. Don"t know how the grass is surviving.

Jack,

I live in between Chandler and Cushing. I want to plant a winter mix of wheat, rye, and vetch this fall. I was wondering the same thing you are.

its sure dry,,i think you have more rain than we have and what you have had has not been enough.i was going to plant about 25 acres or so of alfalfa, but if i wait much longer and i can forget it this year or winter will kill it.so i may just drill in some oats for the winter and see what happens.probably could drill them in right in the wheat stubble and they are fairly cheap.or just wait on rain and drill in wheat, ive seen wheat planted late nov early dec make a crop but your harvesting way up in summer.probably the smartest thing to do would be to fold our seed money up and put it back in our pocket this fall!my old farmers soul just hates to see bare ground though!LOL it so dry out west i saw a cactus drinking out of a dogs bowl.

It's pretty hard to outguess the weather. Some of the guys here in KS are planning on planting the wheat, no starter fert. and seeing what happens. If there is no rain then they will collect on insurance. I am in central KS and it's pretty hard to not plant a crop. We have had a little mositure though. Not enough, but a little. No one can guess that far out. Too bad you can't drill right into the stubble so you don't have to loose what little moisture you might have. That should help me a little. Hard to tell, but I'm planting when it's time. Bob
