The tractor is "exhausting" through the intake on the #1 cylinder. I loosened the rocker on the intake, so the intake valve couldn"t open and the back fire started. I then re-adjusted the rocker and tightened the rocker on the exhaust valve so it could close. The backfire continued, but may lessened a little.

I"m scratching my head on this one. I expected to find a bad push rod or rocker arm.

Any ideas or experience with this problem?

Exhaust NOT opening or not opening enough so combustion gases pop back past intake when it opens.

That was my thought. By tightening the rocker, the valve wasn"t able to shut, but I still had the problem.

The exhaust rocker moves what seems to be the normal amount, so the cam is OK, the pushrod is Ok, the rocker itself is OK, and the valve stem was moving up and down, too, So the valve is broken, somehow, and the head of the valve remains seated, yet the stem moves????
