pics from a day on the tractor

Sent some time working some country with a set of Kelly chains. They are like a set of offsets but the discs are mounted on chains instead of shafts. was useing them to bust up sunflower stalks after harvest. They are 40ft wide and could pull them 8 mph before the chains started to bounce to much. They worked rely well but it would have been better to do it once then rip the paddock and do it again as the soil was very tight and didnt get much depth but we were only renting them and they were already 2 weeks late getting here. These things are used a lot in no till country as a way of controling small weeds and to level wheel marks

Is that something that only you folks have down there??

Dave

The kelly chains are produced here in Australia. i think they have only been around last 5 years or so that i know of. Dave i will give you a race if you wont in your little pasture blocks think you would beat me. Timed it once and took 8 minutes to fold up drive through a gate then unfold again.

Most interesting! Like the others, I had never seen or heard of such, but according to your comment they are relatively new. Thanks for posting.

They are now being exported to the US and Canada.

We have been using them for a few years to knock down stubble. They do a good job, get over the ground quickly and use little fuel.

I know of two of those within 15 miles of here. They seem to do a nice job, throwing just enough dirt to get the cornstalks decomposing a little faster.

The ones around here fold a little different, I don't think tehy are as compact as the one you have pictured.

A couple of questions. Are the discs replaceable or do you replace the entire chain ? If it plugs up can you clear it by backing up ?

Chris im not sure how you replace them if you look at the close up pic of the chain you can see the disks are made in half's and then welded onto the chain. We were looking at it when it was here and reckoned it would be a fair job to grind them off and weld them back on and bet a new set of chains wouldn't be cheap. These aren't a machine id be using in the wet they would clog up very quick and leave a hard pan. This is the 1st time I've used a set and liked the job. seen others using them and they like them

Looks like it is doing a great job. I like your understated sense of humor "a fair job to grind them off and weld them back on" ! If that job was assinged to me I don't think there would be anything fair about it..

(quoted from post at 21:51:13 08/26/11)Timed it once and took 8 minutes to fold up drive through a gate then unfold again.

Nice photo's of a unique machine. I can kinda see what you were meaning when you stated 8 minutes of folding up to get through a gate. In one photo I saw a bunch of hyd cylinders.
