car tires on tractor

Got a 454 IH. Notice a lot of folk around here using truck tires for front instead of typical ag tires, ecspecially for bush use. Any harm in this. Its not money thing. These guys are paying more for the high ply vehicle than the ag tires almost leaving me to think they must work better

Don't think they buy new one but put good used ones on front. I have been using steel belted radials on my Ford 841 for decades due to the fact they are cheap, thorns have a hard time with the tread area and the hold up well to the loader I have on it. Plus I can pick up tires that are good enough for a tractor for less then $10 each

Never seen that in my area other then the one I did buy for my Haybine this year but that was because that was the only way I could find a tire that fit with out spend to much. Got a new on for $35 and a use one small enough a guy wanted $25 for so the new was the best way to go

Dittos to what old said, I can get a decent used steel belted LT tire for $10 and put 60lb of air in it for use in the rock pile with my frontend loader. I think they can take more abuse than bias-belted rib tires, too, since they're made to flex more.

Well I think this old set of dayton 12 ply radials I had left over from my truck are going on a tractor I know of. Load rating each is 2980 pounds at 85 psi. No squatting them girls and I think better than ag in the bush. Thanks all

I have yet to ever have any problem with steering my tractor that I use truck tires on but then they also have loader on them. The one would not matter what tires you used on it the steering is/would be the same be they truck or tri-rib or for that matter flat but that is because of the back hoe on its tail that makes steering at best a fun thing to do and up hill real fun (NOT)

Lot of ag tires are pretty junky. Heavy duty truck tires beat them all to pieces, but it"s not always easy to match sizes. Same goes for batteries.

Looking in the Firestone tire catalog shows a line of bargain tires. A page or two later shows the higher priced, heavier ply HD tires that few folk purchase.

Automotive tires SUCK on the front of a tractor. Loader or not, when you put a load on the 3 point (ie: rotary mower, box blade, disk, plow, ect...) your steering is poor at best.

If one is running automotive tires and says the steering is fine, you are only using 1st gear. Go into a hay field, crank up the disk or drum mower, get moving at 8-10 mph, then make your turn! Tri-ribs have a hard time, automotive tires are like doing a power slide in a Corvette.

I am not bashing them because they are cheap to use (when used or left over from the truck). I'm bashing them because they destroy your steering abilities. This is annoying when making tight turns and can actually be dangerous in hilly terrain.

My grandfather only runs used 16" truck tires and I hate using his equipment because of it. Those tires have ruined me for anything over a 3 or 4 rib F1 tire. I wanted to go with used airplane tires on my loader tractor, but I'm afraid they will perform like truck tires.

Thats my rant on truck tires used as F1 ag tires. If one is worried about flats, get your F1, F2, F4 tires foam filled. At least you can still steer predictively.
