I got the first coat of stain on the doghouse today. I bought it three years ago, got in trouble and put it in the barn. , I finally talked the wife into a dog. We are getting a border collie puppy. I have a boy and forty acres for the dog.

If you haven't got it yet, you'll be much happier with an Australian Sheperd......

Enjoy whatever you get......

The real trick in training a dog is to PREVENT getting the house stained. :)
Good luck with your new friend. Boy, dog and forty acres makes for happienss.

Bingo! to what dave 2 says below.

Not downing Border Collies as they are great dogs but I know from experience that given the situation you described, you will be much happier with an Aussie.

We have had Border Collies for 30+ years. I don't know where you live but they can't tolerate extreme periond of extended heat (like last July). We lost a 10 year old that was a member of the family. If you got the breed with long hair (actually double coat) suggest you have it cut in early summer.
Guess I'll get another one next spring.
Good luck with the Border Collie, they are high energy dogs.
Regards,
Bill.

Sounds like a good plan. When I was young, we always had a pair of border collies on the farm.

They are on the high strung side, but very intelligent. They love to be put to work, and if you spend time with them, they are very loyal and obediant dogs.

We had a female that was a good herder, and a male that was worthless for moving cattle, but would watch every gate on the farm at once. He was awesome, when you could haul manure all day and never have to shut a gate.

My daughter had a border collie for about twelve years. It was a female, the most aggressive of the litter. My daughter bought her to help with sheep handling in the grad student research that she was doing. She should do well in your environment. but as someone else said be careful of hot weather. They don't like to stop even when they need to.
