OT---Variable speed Fan

Can an attic vent fan be connected to a variable speed switch? I know that a motor uses a different type switch, not a variable light switch.
I want to use an attic fan for special ventilation and would like different speeds.

robably not, but it depends on the kind of motor. Universal (not likely your motor type), capacitor start/run, shaded pole, etc.??? Most would be in the synchronous type and if you lower the voltage on this type motor, it will draw more than normal run current, overheat, and burn up winding insulation shortly.
 
The fan is almost certainly driven by an induction motor. Such motors will operate only ad design speed.

That said, you could operate it from a VFAC drive but doing so would not be cost effective for a residential attic fan.

A simple yet cost effective solution would be a two speed motor such as a 4/8 pole, 1800/900 RPM motor wired with a SPDT switch.

Go to a furnace repair facility and by a used squirrel cage blower (Brand Name is best) from a multi speed furnace. Then wire a switch panel to provide three (or so) speeds. Mine is from a Lenox furncae it is reasonably quiet, and cools the whole house in the evenings very well. mine has 4 speeds. Jim
 
VFD's are really coming down in price, it may be worth it not to
cobble something up. Check automationdirect.com, they have a 1/2
HP for $116. I do not use these drives for my industrial customers,
but they are hard to beat for consumers.
 
Hmm, the only attic fans I've installed ARE variable speed. Meaning they have some sort of solid-state thermostat that makes the fan turn faster as the attic temperature rises. However, these fans don't seem to last very long; I think the thermostats burn out quickly.
