I need to get a fresh tranny in my pilot truck before I totally wear out the one in there...it is starting to leak like a seive and has 300k on it....

Does anyone have a recommendation for a factory reman unit I could pop in myself or a good shop near Abilene, TX??

Don't want to deal with the national chain hard sell scammers, and can't spend a whole lot on the truck...it is an 03 F 150 with a 4.2 that gets about 100k a year. Bought it for $2000 but couldn't replace it for that.. (guy thought the tranny was gone 150k ago when I got it...) Truck sees a lot of highway miles but occsionally is my trailering rig for jeeps. I need to pull it to reseal the leaks anyway, so figured it would be a good time to rebuild it before it gives up in the middle of a 3000 mile run.

Well,if you gonna install it,why not rebuild the tranny yourself as well.
It aint rocket science you know

A lot cheaper than buying a reman.

I really do not have the time or shop space to do a decent clean rebuild... and it needs to be a quick r and r to keep me on the road too.

The last one I bought was for my Jeep and the dealer did it all with a 3/36 warranty, and the cost was 1000.00 less than a local transmission shop.

about 10 yrs ago I was in the same place-tranny shot-truck too good to junk. Pulled it my self and to "make sure its right" I took it to the best tranny shop in town. He'll do a bench job but if there is a warranty issue you do the r&r, which is fair. Well you guessed it, I had to r&r twice! And in the end I still had to take the truck in for him to mess with. Oh, and my savings for r&r? $150! Never again!!!

Something to think about, if it's done by your local Ford dealer, and you have a problem 3000 miles away, you can get warranty on that Ford Authorized reman trans at ANY Ford dealer...

It is probably not prudent putting the money for a rebuild in that truck. The motor and all other parts have 300K on them. If that is your lively hood, then get a newer truck. There is a big difference between using that truck for your living and hobby.

If you're in or near Abilene, check with ABCO Transmissions on North 1st. They rebuilt the trans. on my '97 F-150 at a fairly reasonable price and got it in and out of the shop in 2 days.
BTW, I have 300K on my pickup and plan to keep on driving it. Still lot a cheaper to fix than pop for a new one. Besides...I'm saving up for a new Mustang GT!!! :)

A couple of years ago the transmission in the service truck at work went out (an F250 w/automatic). After checking around Waco shops it was a better deal to buy a new one from Ford and do the r&r ourselves. We got a 3 year warranty instead of 90 days. I believe the new one was like $300 more. We got it from some dealer in Austin. Still no trouble with it. We do still pull ten wheel bobtails to start them on occassion.
