Best sounding detroit diesels!

I know lots of people cant stand screaming Gimmys but what is the best sound ing one in a tractor? the john deere 435 with a 2-53, oliver supper 99, with i think a 3-53 or a oliver 1900 with a 4-53? Opinions please. Im stuck between the 3 and 4 cylinder. Thinking 3 cylinders

Sunday I heard and watched a Ford 8000 with a naturally aspirated 6-71. It had a pretty nice growl to it.

RE: ford 8000 with detroit. NO naturally aspirated 6-71's,all have a blower;most are not turboed tho. A turbo takes away the detroits throat and music.

When I was in the Army we had generators with 3 and 4 cylinder Detroits in them. To this day I hate the sound of those screaming things.
In Vietnam my generator shack had 4 4-53s in them. Noisest things in the base camp. Guess who was the target for mortars and rockets at night....

I really liked the sound of the 4-53 in my old Hein Werner excavator.

The main reason, the engine never ever failed to start.

Actually, non turboed Detroits are considered naturally aspirated.

The blower is a scavenge blower.

The was nothing like a big LaFrance fire engine rounding a corner with a v-12 Detroit just a screaming.

we have the 6-71 in our LaFrance century series. it sounds pretty sweet. but check the oil often...

A 3-53 is one I remember from my childhood. My Dad was a logger and his Timberjack skidder had a 3-53. My neighbor has one for occasional use which I borrowed last weekend to pull on some trees I was cutting near the house to make sure they fell in the right direction. I could put up a video with sound clip if anyone really wants to hear it.

Guys, On 10 wheels.... it was a... 8V92 with dual 8in Straight Pipes!!! The 92 series really do not slobber oil like the 71 series did!
Until I saw the Series 60 D.D. run and heard them too, they sound just like a Cat, that series put D.D. back on the map with a Straight 6 cylinder with a fully electrified pump and chaning HP was as simple as changing the little micro processor box on the side of the engine.
On Water.......
A 100 ft party fishing boat with, Twin,,, 16V71s sitting side by side Screaming at full throttle making 22Knots. What a rush!
Only problem is they are drinking DSL faster than a 4 yr old can drink a grape sodawater on a hot simmer day!

The best sounding Detroit diesel is my old Astro. It originally had a green block 430hp 8V92 but that dropped some antifreeze in the oil. That engine was replaced with a Silver Series 440hp 8V92 Turbocharged and Aftercooled. She really gets with the program now, and even though it has a turbo it still has the classic Detroit sound.

All of the two cycles sound great! The best is the 6-71, but this was only available in John Deere 8010/20 I believe. The Oliver Super 99 with 3-71 would be next. The bigger they are the better they sound!

Had a neighbor that had a Massey Ferguson 98 with a detroit in it. You work in the field all day with it and after you shut it off you could still hear it running in your head. Sounds great at first but after all day listening to it, it got old quick

Don't know about the best, but the worst sound is one running away. They don't sound to good running backwards either.

Highway tractors climbing hills here with 318's always sounded good.
I would have to be partial to the JD 435 with the 2-53.
Engine setup and exhaust makes a difference.
I've heard low compression S series 2-53's at shows with round mufflers. All they are is blatting exhaust noise.
With the high compression N series pistons and a real JD oval muffler. Actual engine sounds can be heard louder than the exhaust.
The blower and drive has a nice whine sound and a sharp "diesel rap" can be heard as each cylinder fires.

neihbor had one ,, He said that Detroit sounded best when it left his place for the last time ,,. nikle and dimed him to death
