Wonder if this idea is as good as I think it is

In order to warn drivers that the parked car ahead is about to have driver's open or is opening why not have left turn signal flash? Even if car is turned off. What with door ajar warnings on the dash, there should be electric circuits low costly available. What would be the downside?
 
IA Leo: Good idea... but I would place the flashing lights in the door somewhat close to where the latch/lock is. The latch could switch on a couple red LED flashing lights and turn them off when you slam the door shut. An owner delete if desired would be easy..
I have used the right turn signal when backing up Out of Right-Angle parking when a large truck is blocking my view to on comming cars..
 
You can't fix STUPID!

If someone decides it's beneficial to hop out of a car without looking for passing traffic they are a DUMB (insert favorite expletive here) person and NO amount of lites, bells, or whistles are gonna save 'em!
 

How dare you suggest something that may make folks a little safer but infringe on their godgiven rights to be backward.............. Just another little thing to get the government beaurocrats to get mixed up in.....

Now that I was the first one to throw that stuff in, it's not a bad idea... But the problem would be getting folks to pay attention to it.
 
the downside would be just another thing to fail on the car,IMO. I kinda agree with the others. I look in my mirror and if it's a busy street, I slowly open the door a bit so drivers can see what's going on and then get out (without flinging the door wide open). I don't need another piece of technology to try and make me safe.
 
You gotta think that anyone who would open a door into traffic is an idiot and it's really hard to make anything idiot-proof; they're so resourceful.

that's cause the idiot that would have swung open the door and stepped out into traffic just lived to reproduce........
 
It's nice of you to be thinking along these lines Leo, but to be totally safe, we'd have to ban cars entirely. Then a tree would fall on us. . .

I used to work in road construction, and I've seen families with small children pull over along the interstate and allow the little kids to wander around the van at will, with the traffic wind rocking the van and little Tommy's hair blowing backwards. There ain't no amount of safety devices that will fix a situation like that.
 
BINGO ! They allready have it out there.

I figured the van has it because kids are always likely to be coming and going from them. And it is sure hard to get them to pay attention.
