Replacement Electrical pieces? Help.

I have installed 3 new TS key start swtiches on my tractor and all 3 have failed within 1 mth.
I got off of my AC D 15, left it in gear and shut it down. While I was in the garage, I heard it start cranking over. It actually started and was beginning to move forward when I got to it.
Of course they would not listen to my complaint, so I thought I would redo the start switch gear.
I installed a push button starter switch and an off on toggle. Darn if the toggle didn't melt down. Can you buy good quality electrical components anywhere? The TS electrical stuff is made in India.

This type of set up caused my buddy's expensive machine to burn up when the guy he lent the machine to left the toggle on and fuel leaked onto a red hot wire. So its nice to have a key to shut off and take out .

I truthfully never thought of too much current. The system has an alternator exciter on it. Is that switch to be on all of the time or is it just needed to get the alternator started?

Alternator excite on most is on when the engine is running and off when not running. It can be set up to be turned on then the switch turned back off and the alternator will still keep charging. If I where you I would maybe install a fuse in the ignition system so as to see if you are in fact drawing to many amps. Say your using a 20 amp switch I would install a 15 amp fuse

If you have an exciter in the system maybe you should look at going to a 3 wire alternator and a rewire of the tractor.

You are correct about switches. They make good ones and cheap ones. I always buy the battery ignition switches for a garden tractor for my big tractor. They are designed to be exposed to the weather! I pay more for my electrics and get em from NAPA in the Echlin line if available. Blue Streak is another good brand. The stuff that TS makes and is offered by Fleet Farm, TSC and other farm supply places are not of very good quality IMO. Thinking about marine grade ones too. Going to try that on my TLB. I'm thinking thats the way to go.

OLD,
When I rewired my old tractors, I installed a fuse in each circuit, including the alternator. Each fuse protects the wire used. My alternator was wired with a 10 guage wire, so I used a 30 amp circuit breaker. Also make sure that the switch you buy can carry the amps. Sounds to me you are not getting a heavy enough switch. Most switches have in small print their amp rating.

Count your amps. Don't blame TS if you purchase a 10amp switch and you need a 30 amp.

The switch is undersized to handle the starter solenoid current. Add a relay to the start circuit.
Then again you bought a TSC switch instead of the AC switch. Don't be surprised if the TSC switch is lower rated.

As stated already, solenoids draw lots of amperage. A relay for two horns operated by your starting switch with the relay output to the solenoid might work well.
