Let me begin by saying I AM NO MECHANIC. My son"s 98 Ford Taurus"s get up and go got up and went. It runs, but when idling it runs rough or fair at best. Feels like it has no power to move and like no fuel getting to engine. Well I changed the fuel filter tonight and no difference. Where do I look now?]

GMC My 98 Jimmy 2 door wouldn"t start the other day and I thought I couldn"t hear the fuel pump run. Well tonight just for fun, I went over put the key in and turned key on and low and behold the fuel pump runs and it starts. What"s up with that?
Before this when the temperature got about 88 degrees outside, it would kick and buck like .....no fuel getting to engine and I had to pump it to keep it running.
Put a new fuel filter on this also.

3.0 or 3.8 liter engine? Taurus runs but no power, I would look for problems with the EGR valve and or the DPFE sensor / valve that controls the EGR position. Also look for any vacuum leaks in the intake system. Has it thrown any DTC's

start it up and check to see if there is exhaust running at the tailpipe, sounds like clogged catalytic convertor. no power...really quiet?
 
EGR is exhaust gas recirculation. This has been around since at least the 70's.

DPFE is Delta Pressure Feedback EGR.

Last thing has it set any codes?
 
On the Jimmy it has set no codes. Just you-tubed cleaning an EGR mechanism, but I got to find the thing on the engine first.
 
On the Jimmy -- How many trinkets on the key ring?
Extra keys, crescent wrenches,dream catchers ?

May have the ignition switch worn not making good contact all the time.
 
jimmy fuel pump lays down when they get hot ,or bad connector at tank unit , very common ,can be intermittant . Do a fuel pressure and volume and dead head pressure test. Don't throw any of the hundred parts suggestions you'll get at it ,until you test fuel pump .
