Dog sprayed by skunk

I got home from work about 4:30pm. Wife was asleep( works nights), dog waiting when I opened the door. She has a barking fit when I get ready to go out, so I let her out while I went to change clothes and then go outside. I looked out the basement door to see her run by like she was chasing something and then she came running back fast. I opened the door and smelled skunk. She got hit lightly, not real bad but smells. I have a bottle of odor eliminator that is supposed to take the smell away. Label says to not get it in eyes ,mouth or nose. That's where she got hit, in the face.Rubbed her down with the stuff, still a faint smell of skunk. Can't leave her out, she will probably get it again if I do. Any good ways to get rid of the smell? Got her in the basement right now, and I can smell her a little. Chris

Ketchup bath, or tomatoe juice , then "skunk off " really works , or WD 40 then girly hair shampoo .. been through it twice over the years

There's a remedy I've seen before, but I never bothered to save the "recipe." You could look it up on-line -- somebody must have it posted...

It involves regular dish soap, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Supposed to work really well eliminating skunk odor.

It can't be sold commercially, because as soon as you add the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda together, it builds up pressure, so don't put it in a closed container.

I sympathize, 'cause it only takes two seconds for a dog to get sprayed, but it takes days for the odor to go away 100%.

Let us know how you make out...

1 qt. hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp liquid dish soap

Mix it up in an open bucket. I used this all the time back when I was trapping skunks, works great!

my mastiff has done it thre times in the past month. tomato juice worked okay, the peroxide and baking soda as mentioned the best IMHO.

I got something from my vet once for a cat called "skunk away". A spray bottle, worked great.

I was told last week that edge shaving gel works very well. Not sure exactly how it works, but heard this from someone that has had a number of dogs sprayed.

George & Lumpie's posts are correct...
We have to many Jack Russells to mention, live right down on the river.
The supply of skunk's, porcipine, & beaver is endless!!
We keep several of the biggest bottles of peroxide Walmart sells on hand, several big boxes of baking soda, a bottle of dawn dish soap, & a bucket to mix it in down in the green house...we have 2 deepsinks down there & we dont have to worry about stinkin up the house for the bath's!!!

I Just put about half a box of baking soda in, 50/50 water & peroxide, a dab of dawn or if their face we use liquid Ivory (almost always in the face)
Mix that stuff up into a paste that is just a little runny, and "shampoo" the dog with it....make em wear it for a few minutes, rinse & repeat.

We also keep some sort of an eye ointment that is good for soothing their eyes. And a big tube of activated charcoal as well, we almost lost one of our dogs because he had a skunk cornered under an out building...they were under there for about 45 minutes (dont think they were making friends either!!!LOL) before the skunk finally came out & we could catch the dog.
He had ingested so much of that skunks spray, that as soon as he calmed down he had the runs in a bad way, then went to throwing up repeatedly.
We got some charcoal in him pretty quick & it was still hit and miss for awhile, about the time we had decided to head for the vet he started coming around.

DO NOT EVER WET A DOG (or human) BEFORE you get the baking soda paste on.....you WILL make it worse!!!!
Tomato Juice & Ketchup....BS does nothing but feed more energy into the skunks scent, the scent & acid from tomato's for some chemical reason do not like each other!

Dont beleive me? "Google" skunk scent removal & read away!!

We average a dog every 2 weeks every year...this is how we handle it & it works!!!
I know its probably too late for help this go around for you this time, but write the recipe down & keep it & a kit somewhere handy for the next time!!!
Ps: Latex gloves too if you want...we have a box of em down there too...almost forgot!!

I've been sprayed a number of times. I just leave my boots upside down and truck rightside up; both outside, for rain rinsing's.

Mix 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1-2 tsp dish soap.

Apply the mixture on the dog (don"t wet the dog down first). Use a wash cloth to apply the mixture on the face and around eyes. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Then rinse the dog with lukewarm water.

I use this mixture in my Vet practice and it works well.

Masingill and vinegar. It works well. Not what a guy wants to go carrying to the cash register, but its worth the embarrassment if you buy ten of each so you never ever have to be seen buying it again.

Good luck.

I have always had excelent results with Grandpa's Pine Tar soap. It will even take the odor out of a goat buck in rut.
