case sc, are there any achile heals?

Gentleman 2 miles away has decided to sell a case sc that he used to pull over 10 yrs ago. He has lost interest in the sport since then. He bought the tractor for $750 and has put a valve job on it. Currently it needs starter work as it will start one time and just grind the next. One rear tire is nearly wore bare but he is throwing in another tire mounted on a rim. Are there any achile heal with these tractors. I know little of case tractors of this era. He wants what he paid for it. Im thinking to offer $600. This tractor would be used for my wife to use on tractor rides. Do you think this would be suited for this kind of thing? Thank you all for your expertise.MIKE

The starter might be an Autolite if it's the same as the one on a VAC. Parts are very hard to find for an Autolite in the brush/brush spring area. Don't know about the drive. Could be the ring gear is giving trouble instead of the starter. I read somewhere on this site, maybe the Case forum, that you can put the smaller S sprockets in the SC rear end to give it a little more speed. I'm thinking of giving it a try on my SC if I can find the sprockets. Jim

Agree with fixerupper on the ring gear may be a problem. But the starter shouldn"t be that much trouble to get most pieces for. The drive is a common drive for that era.It is a prestolite starter. I really like my sc just wish it had 1 lower gear sometimes. jstpa

A very good older tractor a little lit on power about equal with farmll h or early JD B.

I have a Farmall 300U. Seemed like the engine kept getting stuck. Was actually the starter drive gear. Didn't grind, just stuck. So, pull your starter and look at it and the ring gear.
