Look what followed me home!

This little fellow followed me home today. In faded letters on the hood it says Workmaster 601 but in the casting above the starter it says 641 w s/n 133730. He was in a shed that we moved for a customer. Part of the farm was sold and according to the son the tractor was bought new by his parents.
Seems in pretty fair shape for 50 yrs.old. I have a few questions.... Is this color the one that it came from the factory with? The grill and wheels are grey and the red color appears to be original??? It has a 12 volt battery in it but the way the points are burned I am guessing 6 volt system. With all adjustments correct will starting be reliable? How about that gas line going right over the top of the engine and manifold? should it be insulated or is vapor lock not an issue? Anyone recognize the mower? It appears to all be there.....maybe I can get a job mowing road banks :)My blood generally runs green but this thing could find a home here.

Looks just like my 61 model.Color's right and factory PS.The 2 things that aren't are the seat and the bumper. It does have a 6 volt generator.Good Luck.

Mower was made by Detroit Harvester. Fitted to Ford, Massey, John Deere utility tractors.

The tube which runs from the belt pulley to the pitman crank has a telescoping shaft with U-joints. Good chance that these joints are worn. If you hear a lot of driveshaft noise, this is the place to look.

This outfit would be really handy for pruning grapevines.

Nice find.

It's a 641. Four speed transmission without live PTO.

The paint scheme is correct as is the bumper. The seat is not.

The fuel line looks to be OEM as near as I can tell from the photo and is not an issue. By definition, a gravity flow system cannot vapor lock.

Tractor should be 6V positive ground, and will start reliably in just about any conditions if everything is right.

Not too many 6x1 tractors have power steering and many similar vintage Fords have badly worn PS pumps. Be sure to thoroughly flush the PS oil and refill with the correct CNH 134D. Change the filter that is in the reservoir beneath the oil.

Nice little tractor.

Looks like Eaton power steering..there is a
doughnut shaped filter inside the reservior,
NAPA, has them..there are several similar sizes,
you may have to measure the old one and match it
to drawings and specs. in their filter catalog!
