OT- Chinese Quality

Son bought several bicycle tubes for his kids" bikes. One came with a patch on it next to the valve stem. Apparently too good to throw away, even if it didn"t hold air.

I'd go with dave on this one. Some smart a$$ figured he could get a refund on a patched tube.

Don't take it wrong......I think most of the stuff coming out of China is junk!

Better just set fire to your place and move in with the Amish then. They prolly ain't even chink free anymore tho............

Speak of Chinese quality. The other day I bought points for a 630 Deere, from mother Deere. After installation I couldn't get them set wide enough by turning the adjusting screw. I've never run into this problem in my life that I remember. So I grabbed the needle nose pliers and attempted to tweak the points arm just a bit. I thought I'd be in for a fight cause I've done this before to align the contacts and it takes a fair amount of effort. Well I gave it a mighty twist and the arm bent WAY too far. It just bent like a wimp. I'm afraid the arm will bend and open the point gap just from opening and closing while the tractor is running. And these points came from Deere, not some cheap aftermarket outfit. I didn't check to see if China was stamped on it but I'll betcha it is.Jim

That's probably what happened.

Speaking of cheap junk, I went to O'Reilly's the other day to get a power steering belt for my old beater '78 Chevy snowplow pickup.

Feller behind the counter said, "I've got one for $4.95 and one for $17.95". I thought, "What the he11", and took the cheap one. When I got to my shop and took it out of the sleeve, I noticed it was made in USA. Wished Ida checked where the high priced one was made.

wonder what the chinese use for tools ,, since all the $$ hitthey send here is junk , how do they fix anythin with their crappy tools

I used to work on equipment made in Germany and the tools that they sent along with the machines were very clumsy and old fashioned looking, I wonder what their top craftsmen use?

Actually, the rectangular(?) patch looked new, just like the tube. Just a thick chunk of rubber glued next to the stem.

They bought OUR good quality machine tools,(Lathes,Mills, ect) years ago at auction. I read years ago about the asians coming over and buying up the machine tools. I seen an article that showed pictures of them running machines from our now gone textile mills making the shirts that used to be made here. They have good machines, The junk comes here. Thank globalization for that.

I've seen that too. high $$ chinese stuff at Napa and "lower $" USA parts at A-zone/advance/oreallies. Like to support my local napa guy since they are customer of mine too but don't like to pay for junk.

What we had, was a FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE. leaders did the deed, after they were elected by who????. Then the equalization of world markets took effect. No Need to complain , It was all asked for.

If you're fed up with 'chinese quality' just thank American big business. Our guys want stuff to sell here for really cheap prices, so the chinese go along with it. For at least the last couple of years I have been sending the message with my purchasing that I prefer and will pay for quality goods, especially if manufactured domestically. I don't know that anyone has noticed, though.

I live a few mile from Amish Country in Ohio and we spend way too much time eating there but they have souvenirs that have Made in China on them. So do the American Indians in North Carolina where I used to live.

Certainly not defending the chinese but our country has been preaching buy american made products but they sure dont have a problem when it comes to selling amerian companys to them, just like Peterson Vise Grips etc for big bucks!! Sometimes by doing this dimishing the competition of american products which also drives the cost up for us if we want to buy american made products!! Tires are another example of this, very few tires are american made and then they raise the tariffs on import tires so they cant drive the price of american made down!! Like I said not by any means defending Chinese products but what can we do about all the american made products ending up being owned by the Chinese when its the big companys making the big bucks and we end up paying the consequences!!!!

Can go along with the indians cause they are supposed to be asian descent (depending on who you ask)... But the Amish is killing me.... Was telling my wife about them and the way they did things. First thing we saw at the edge of Amish country was a gas station with a guy in his buggy filling gas cans...........

the Chinese are perfectly capable of turning out very high quality products and do when high quality is specified by the buyer.

The issue is the american companies importing this crap are having it made to a specific price point to move product quickly.

the Chinese also manufacture machine tools. One example is a 12x36 metal lathe. You can buy that lathe for between 1700 and 4500 bucks.

By that I mean they look like the same exact lathe until you look closely or open them up. The castings are indeed pretty much identical but the precision of the components that matter vary wildly.

I and a friend have identical looking lathes. Mine will hold a cut to .0002" and his won't come close to that. The runout on my spindle is .000025 his is .0005. My machine makes about half as much noise running as his does.

I could go on and on about the subtle but meaningful differences.

I paid 4500 for mine he got his for around 2200

The vendor who imports the lathe I bought has much stricter mfg standards than his does.

You may want to thank BIG GOVERNMENT. EPA, OSHA, IRS, ect. AND Thank you unions.

We can build the same junk here or we can build the best there is. How much do you want to pay?

Everybody wants to make big wages, but pay nothing for goods and services. Where do you think business is going to go? You can't afford to build a new factory with all the GOVERNMENT REGS and still turn a profit. Look @ all the tax incentives given to Foreign companies investing in the US.

Half of it is we're the ones buying it, half of it is there's usually only one or a few companies selling it.

When folks just out to make a buck take over a company like Irwin, it becomes a win-win if they can sell a tool for 50% less, make 25% more profit on each, and sell you that same tool three times over because it wears out faster then when they built them better.

Whether they make in China or the U.S. doesn't impact the selling cost, or even the profits, that much at all. They can make it just as well, just as cheap, and just as profitable in the U.S. but to do so takes a larger up-front investment to build a more automated factory. They'd rather use cash or loans that would take to buy other businesses and instead send the manufacturing to a low cost of labor country.

Complaints of "high cost of business" only go so far; it's not the cash cost that's the big problem, it's that it would take you three years to get the permits for what they can get started on in three weeks in China. Not having enough cash is easy to fix -- it's called a loan. Nothing you can do about not having enough time to wait for the bureaucracy to move.

They see folks buying from Northern Hydraulics all the time and folks who get a hard on when the latest Harbor Freight catalog arrives and know full well most American consumers would rather spend less on more junk, then have less things but made with higher quality.

"The issue is the American companies importing this crap are having it made to a specific price point to move product quickly."

Half right. Companies have it made to a price point, but if they don't monitor the quality the Chinese will make it as cheap as they can. They'll make it to spec if they have to, but only if they have to.
