Beartooth Highway (southern Montana)

Anybody here driven the Beartooth Highway in southern Montana? I'm planning on including it in our itinerary for my vacation next week. Probably hitting the Beartooth on Thursday, fairly early in the day. Wondering mostly about the grade from Cooke City MT to the summit.

It,s been awhile since I was on it but it'awesome. Wanted to take it a couple of years ago but the road was closed for construction. Are you taking a car, rv,or what? It gets pretty steep and the altitude is a little over 14000 feet at the top so unless you have a turbocharged engine your steed won't have as much gallup. Is your wife bothered by heights? Jim

I took the entire road last summer in our RV so any grade cant be all that bad. Charles Kuralt figured it as the USA's most scenic byway as I recall, ITS BEAUTIFUL. I took it from Red Lodge Montanna to Yellowstone and then to The Grand Tetons.

If you Google Beartooth Highway there are all sorts of guides and info available. Dont miss a stop at "The Top of the World Store" and dont be in a hurry, there are plenty of rest stops and scenic areas

Youre gonna love it

Hmm, everything I've seen says about 10,500 at the top. We've been thru Rocky Mt Natl Park which goes over 11,000 ft (I think it passes 12,000 in places) so no problems there. And our vacation home is at the top of Highway 74 out of Palm Desert, CA. Switchbacks look about the same as that road.

Thanks for the response. We're looking forward to it. It's not our major destination. Major destination is a niece's wedding in Fargo, but we're gonna stop for three days in Yellowstone Park on the way. Beartooth looked like a logical addition to that trip.

When you leave Yellowstone I would advise you to go thru Greybull to Tensleep and highway 14 thru the Bighorns on your way to Gillette, also a must see for scenery. If your into Airplanes, theres a Graveyard in Greybull for Military and Forest service aircraft. The plane on Flight of the Phoenix is there in the museum.

Ain't going to Gillette. We need to head back to I-90, since our real destination is Fargo. Someday after I'm retired I'd like to spend as much time as I can visiting all the sights this country has to offer. So far I've seen much of the west, but there's always so much more.

was in Beartooth 4 weeks ago on motorcycle. this place is just GREAT lots of snow up high. came in from the north side from Redlodge and down the south side to ST.Joseph by way over to Belfry on 296 we ran in to 75 MPH winds other then that i like it better then Glacier.[a lot less people]

Just did that drive 2 weeks ago with an old 1997 Grand Caravan with 175,000 on the clock. No problem. I think Top Of The World party store nic nacks said 10,900 and some change as the elevation. Probably went up another 500-600 feet to reach the top. I thought it was odd I did not see A sign giving the elevation at the top. I was told it is the highest point in Montana.
Be sure to have plenty of gas as gas was 4.25 in Cooke City.
Should be able to play in the snow, we did. Mark
