I liked the question about best tractors from each brand...here is a new poll:

If you could only have 3 tractors from any era up to 1985- which i know for many would be hard - to operate a small farm (couple hundred acres, some animals, bale some hay, plow/till)...what 3 would you choose.

mine:
Oliver 1655 w/ loader
MF 285 Diesel,
JD 4320

JD 4440, just cause I'm more or less familiar with those, plus it would have working A/C!!
IH 560, cause I just like that tractor.
IH 664, cause I already own one.

365 acres,50 Holstiens in milk,tractors of choice:
AC D21DT
AC 190XT
AC D17G
Add a couple of AC WD45G"s and this is what I farmed with back in the late 60"s early 70"s.The D21 was a replacement for an older 190XT and was bought in anticipation of aquiring an additional 200 acres of crop land which never happened.I sold out in the spring of 1972.

Consider adding a question as to the respondents age. I think it would be fun to see how what era of tractors they grew up with affects their choices. would be the tractors that they learned to drive on, Or more like the first ones that they bought and used??

Just like great grandad- 3 Oliver 77"s. Could it be any better? I think a Farmall H or M could be in there also. If you want to talk about closer to "85-it"s hard to beat a JD 4640 with soundgard cab, powershift and A/C. Probably one of the best 160hp tractors ever in my book. My 2 cents.

The same three we used when I was growing up:

Case "C"
Case "DC"
Case "LA"

They are easy to work on if something needs to be fixed.

Pretty much what I was using up until last year, a pair of Ford 7600's and a 5600 with a loader and hay spear.

What I have is 200 acres and some critters......

I have a 1206 IH that i would love to replace with an 806 IH.

I have a M that I would love to replace with a 560D IH.

I have a Ford 8N....that's a keeper and fills a nitch very well.

I'd add another one though....a TLB! What a fantastic tractor to have on the farm!

A lot of good choices made here on this thread. When you said it could go up to 1985 that put me on one thought. 50 series Deeres. A 2550 for light work and a 4450 and 4850 for heavy worked. Of course all three would be fully optioned. If you had said 1980 or before I might say JD 4020, IH 1066, and Oliver 1655.

great poll in my honest opinion.

my choices:
-massey ferguson 165
-oliver 1655
-oliver 1850
(if i could cheat and get one more id get a 1066)

i know the best options for this would be the 40 and 50 series jd's but these are cheaper options that are easy to work on.

probably have a loader on the massey 165 and a set of 18.4-34 duals for the 1655 and the 1850.

I'll go along with your criteria, but I would add to it a few acres of market garden. Hard to make a profit without selling at least some stuff retail.

Here's my list:

Ford 5000 diesel, 1970 or later

Allis Chalmers D17 gasser, preferably series IV

Allis Chalmers G, or an Allis B if no significant market garden.

Farmall C
Farmall M
(possibly super C and M)
JD 4020.

All running great and 102% gone through before I bought them home. lol.

Seeing that I kept Politicans in their 5 star Hotels and Executive travel for all those years, I have now reversed it but ever so slowly. As a result they have allowed me a
Fordson M D
Fordson Super Major X 2
Ferguson TEA20
Ferguson TEA20 in shed waiting for the Doctor.

Years ago in my only visit to Sunday School. I remember getting a card which depicted a sheaf of Hay. The caption read "As ye sow, so shall ye reap"
I am now doing that although in small portions so one could say my crop was a success..

Allis Chalmers WD45 w/ #17 loader - manure loading, snow removal, bush hoging hay raking sicklemowing etc
Allis Chalmers 185 manure hauling, planting, hay baleing, feed grinding, light tillage etc.
Allis Chalmers 210 heavy tilage, deep ripping, grain hauling, stalk choping, heavy snow removal etc
