Quail hunting

I used to go quail hunting 2-3 times a week in the 80's. Farmers were planting beans fence row to fence row . and there were fireant hills everywhere. Hunting was great, then some timber company imported coyotes to control the deer and the quail vanished along
with most of the wild rabbits. The Mississippi river used to be a natural barrier that kept the coyotes out. Coyotes have a tremendous sense of smell and they can find the coveys on the roost at night. Out west they have valley quail which roost in trees, they may be the answer to restocking quail in areas where they have vanished.

Coyotes are thick in my area west of Rochester NY and I haven't seen a pheasant in our area since that started and I still see way too many deer. If you leave any kind of poultry outside without a real good fence they soon disappear too. Pretty good fox population here also.

We have coyotes in Southern New Jerseyalso. People have asked game wardens how did they get here. The only answer is "I don't know".

I read an article several years ago which named the company that brought in the coyotes , it is public record. Turkeys are also in decline and I believe if they roosted on the ground, there would not be any turkeys either.

For the longest time PA game commission refused that they did any such thing. Then an article was published in a reputable hunting magazine about the trade that we made with Michigan or some mid western state as turkeys for coyotes.... Now they are everywhere around PA. Thanks Game Commission for that brilliant move. But they also are hurting our pheasant and grouse populations. When I started hunting about 10 years ago you would see 60-100 deer a day. Now its maybe 10-20 on the best of days. So Now we all go coyote hunting to help cut the populations down.

In southern IN at my house they imported turkeys because the coyotes they imported ate all the turkeys. So now there's a pack of turkeys of about 50 now that come out in a pasture by my house and all the coyotes dissappeared. Does anyone figure turkeys went up in the food chain and started eating coyotes? lol. The some bucks dissappear when turkey season comes around. It's like they know.

In this area of Missouri your lucky to see many if any Quail and rabbits are almost as few. Back in the early 80s you could count 100 rabbits just on the drive out to the mail box which is a mile from the house but now almost never see either one. You do have to dodge the deer now and then but that is about it and yep turkeys are around but not as many as say 10 years ago

Well, I didn't realize that the quail situation was that bad all over! The N.C. Wildlife Commission and the Dept. of Agriculture have been working for several years to try to figure how to get the population built up.
I know that there are several different types of quail, around here we had Bobwhite quail. There used to be quite a few around here but I haven't heard one in about three or four years. The last time I heard one was in the spring and I guess it was a male looking for a mate. He was in the woods behind the house for three or four days, I would frequently hear his "Bobwhite" call, but obviously he did not find what he was looking for and moved on. I sure do miss them.

I just googled this, and could only find that coyotes were imported into Florida for dogs to hunt with.

What company imported the coyotes in your area?

I am seeing more coyotes, and less pheasant/quail in Iowa than when I was young. I remember my grandparents hunting coyotes in Missouri. We never saw one in Iowa then.

We did not have predatory birds, due to DDT, and turkeys then.

I am not sure what the total issue is with the dying off of game birds.

Hunting quail is my favorite. I didn't grow up with them, but a friend in Oklahoma invited me out a couple years ago. I got hooked big time! Hope to get to Kansas this fall.
