Saw some quail this morning that was about the size of sparrows. Got closer and they all flew. Never would have though that they could fly before grown..... Learn something every day.......

When I was growing up here in north Louisiana the sound of the female quail's 'Purr-r-icha, Purr-i-cha' and the male's answering 'Bob-Bob-White!' were familiar and common components of the summer pageant. In the fall these birds provided many great hunting opportunities for me, my dad and his dogs.

Unfortunately, it has been more than 20 years since I have heard or seen a quail in the wild. Damn fire ants have wiped them out, along with other species of ground-nesting birds.

Cutest thing I have ever seen were kill dee (snipes?) babies. They nested in our pasture (probably decimated by fire ants, too). The babies looked like a little puff of feathers on toothpicks. Cute as they could be.

15+ yrs ago there were quail at the farm. I can remember hearing them from the house. That was before the fire ants moved in to the area.

Now the quail are gone. So are the ticks. Don"t mind the ticks being gone, but miss the quail.

Reading Nancy's post about Killdeer reminds me that we have a lot of them around here still. They nest on the ground, usually in very open fields with minimum cover and usually only two eggs per nest. When scared from their nest the mother birds do that fake injury thing by running around dragging a wing and trying to distract you from the nest. I have on several occations stopped and moved the nest of eggs to the tilled ground to try to save them but really don't know if that is successful. Their young are indeed very interesting and they can run pretty fast on those little "tooth pick" legs. Kinda like a miniature Road Runner. Having their nests in open fields subjects them to destruction by the huge implements used in tillage. Have also seen many horned toad lizards this summer.

10 years ago here on our Tennessee farm used to see several covey but now very rare to see or hear a quail. Some people say the increase in Turkey population has something to do with the demise of the quail. Others blame the cyote but I know for one there is just not many quail.
