JD 420 (Lawn Mower) Onan Engine

Well she finally blew up...at least I think. She is blowing oil out the breather...real bad. What do you all think and can I get parts for it?If so on the parts, where?

I can tell you John Deer will have them but will probably be mighty expensive. I have a JD318 withan Onan engine so I know the cost. JD wanted $20 for a spark plug wire when I did a tune up.I don't know if NAPA would carry parts for garden tractors.

Mother Deere or an Onan distributor, bring money they'll be pricey. Onan is owned by Cummins and the parts price reflects this. You might be better off switching it over to a Honda engine, I have seen some folks that might even take your old engine on trade towards a new Honda and offer kits to bolt the Honda engine in. Small Engine Warehouse in Indiana comes to mind. Good Luck-SBB

I'd repower it if I really wanted to keep it. Briggs or Honda complete replacement kit is $1750.

It sounds high but hold on when you find out what a rebuild kit for the Onan runs.

Contact "The Shelby Mall" or: "Glen's Surplus" in Shelby, Ohio..
They have the best prices on things and ship Country-Wide..
They will probably have any brand of Complete engine, or parts, or Both..
Takes all day to go thru the entire place..!

I used to get my Onan engine parts in Hilliard, Ohio at "Great Dane" trailers..
Probably still carry them..
Found that any Standard Bore Onan can be Bored 1/4" to the "Big-Bore" model..
Sure adds plenty power..!!

I blew a rod on my Onan equipped 420; replaced with a Honda 24 horse from Small Engine Warehouse several years ago & never looked back.

I have a 23HP Vanguard in my 318 after the Onan blew up. I love it. Got it from Jim's Repair in Hastings, MN.

I priced a short block for a CCK onan from an outfit in Syracuse NY 4 years ago to put in a Lincoln 225 welder. $2,250! Screw that I said! I could have bought a new Miller Bobcat 225 with a Kohler Magnum off Fleabay for $2,600 delivered back then.
Eventually parted out the Lincoln 225 on Fleabay, Made $200 more than I paid for it and kept the 25' leads! Onan is one of those used to be operations.

i would simply put another engine in it,I have yet to find it pay to overhaul engine, either short block it or go complete i did short blocking last season and really not sure if i would do very many that way cause you can get complet drop in motor for 1700 and up range full retail. second year being fulltime small engine dealer and repair along with still assemble the big machinery too, start bck on grain augers next week 13x61 unit

I bought a 318 this spring that ran great and after about 10 hrs it blew oil smoke out of exhaust and the intake area was full of oil. I thought it was time for a repower, but the problem was the air filter was clogged. You might want to dig a bit deeper before replacing the engine.

NAPA has an excellent "Outdoor Power Equipment"
catalog that has just about anything you'd need
for Tecumseh, Briggs, and Kohler engines. It has both genuine Kohler parts, and NAPA brand after-
market Kohler parts, but virtually nothing, except filters, for Onan.

Last Onan I rebuilt was much cheaper, by half getting the parts from Deer over the price from Onan.

My wifes 420 started smoking and I was laid up so I had a Amish guy rebuild it,cost $550.00 total, Runs like a new one,in fact shes using it right now
