Visited today with Boots Oneal brand inspector for the 6666 ranch, He said they were having to ship their mama cows to Wyoming and Nebraska, because of the drought. This is the first time since the Burnett family has had to do this since
the ranch was bought in 1899.

Boots stated that he had visited with a Waggoner
Ranch cowboy and they had shipping 3000 head of cows to Nebraska.

Both of these ranches are spitting distance of where we live.

when I was in high school---me and my best friend worked summers putting up fence on the waggoner ranch. live roughly 30 miles from it now.

Saw on the news where a lot of growers were having to sell their cattle. Price of beef should come down in the grocery store, temporarily, but I doubt if it will. Then it will go through the roof because there will be a shortage.

Some of the sale barns limit what they take. Selling them is only part of the problem. Shipping can't keep up.
I live west of Ft Worth. We have it bad. It gets worse as you go west. Some places have had NO rain since September.
I normaly sell some hay, but there is nothing to bale this year. I am still feeding my cows.
A friend made 14 bales on 50 ac.
Send Hay. Good stuff is better than gold.

Be ready for the price of beef to go up in the upcoming months at the store. I wish them luck and hope they can keep their heads above water ( no pun intended )

Donald, Most of the local Sale Barns here in Central Texas are running near capacity
Lampasas ran 1700 to 1800 3&4 weeks ago 2 weeks ago in the 2500 range. Sale was today I expect sale to be in the 2000 range.
Comanche Tx ran 2500 to 3000 3&2 weeks ago don't know about the is week.
Fredricksburg Tx has run Balls to the wall too lately, Just like Meridian Txmost all sale barns here in Texas!
Cattle will be high for the duration. What will be the hot commodity are young heifers calves that are held for the next 18 months, made into young cows, sold /w calves at side and bred back.....a man will more than double today's sale prices, more like 3 times .....The rub will be what to do for a Home for the next 18 months.

My brother was just down there this last week. He has bought 750 pairs straight of the ranch. HE has over 1500 rolls of hay and two three hundred foot corn silage bags to feed them on. He usually feeds a lot of steers but this last year the corn/feeder/beef price would not show a profit for him. So he just sit on his feed. He will make good money on these cattle. He plans to ween the calves as soon as they are going good. He then will pour the feed to those skinny momma cow. They will get healthy fast that way. He will breed them back. He will have them to sale as breed cattle next spring. I did that six years ago when the Dakotas where so dry. It is a lot of work but you can make good money at it. Plus it breaks my heart to see young momma cows go to slaughter.

I have a cutting of hay to get off of some pasture ground in two weeks. If we keep getting some rain so it will grow back I will buy some of them myself.

Halletsville, Tx sale barn sold approx 3000 head last week, last year sold approx 1000 same week. Prices have dropped because the system is jammed up with volume. Record prices are in the future BUT have to get there. Hay prices IF you can find any are like gold. But in a lot of cases now lack of water is the problem. Had a friend sell his whole herd because he didn't have any water for them.
I've got well water (for now) but will be out of hay in another 3 months. Ran out of grass a month ago. Been looking for hay for awhile now. Most I've found too high, $100 4x5 bale or baled on highway r-o-w, full of plastic, cups, beer cans.
Bottom line is I probably will be out of cattle business too.
