OT - What about Steel trusses?

I've used hundreds of steel bar joists (not from Armour), can't beat the price/function which is why you see them in commercial buildings (and all my houses). Don't know about a 16' trailer though, usually considerably longer. The ones we had shipped to South Carolina, found them in West Va., are for a 450 ton roof, 46' clear span. Amazingly cheap, delivered.

Try a regional craigslist search, or ebay. Normally they're built per order through a steel co. If you find some sitting around the price is generally great.

Good luck.

KISS....
Keep It Simple S.... (you pick the word)

I could really see the usefulness and ease...........

Sorry for semi hijacking your thread, but any idea if there is a site that shows the deminsions of the material used? Look real easy to make and I live dangerously close to a steel handler that the wife gets a nice discount from and I can take an additional 19% from.....

Are you talking about the dimensions of the steel used for the trusses?

I've been looking but haven't got a real good look at it just yet to see exactly what they're using and how they are put together.

If I could get eyes on one, I may be in the shop with my chop saw and stick welder myself.

Exactly..... We don't have a lot to worry about as far as snow here (especially with a metal roof). Have a sawmill in town but can see the steel being lighter, easier, and in my case much cheaper.........

Anything I build will be 3 meters (10ft) wide and at the moment I have 2c4 Ibeam that I think would make nice rafters but only enough to do about half what I want.

We have used the 2 piece metal like that several times building a 40 ft wided building because we could not get a truck with a 40 ft truss on to the site. Haven,t hac any regrets. Gos together fast and about the same price or maybe a little cheaper than wood. That is diffrent from using a bar joist. Bar joist are sued and fine for side sheds but what he has there is a true truss.

The book Farm Arc Welding by Morford has a lot of info on making steel trusses on site. The book was published By Lincoln Electric in the 60s.A jig was built, parts layed in and welded up.I have a copy for sale on my book list.
