JD 2440 Stuck Range Shifter

I was hauling a load of sand up a hill and the engine started to bog down. I put in the clutch and the brake to shift down and as i did the tractor rolled backwards a bit. The range shifter from high to low gear is stuck now. The tractor will not move and I can not shift into reverse, high, low or park. The engine still starts in the stuck shifter position. I can not move the gear shifter either. Any ideas?

Yep. Take that tin cover off around the shifter so you can slide the rubber boot up the shifter. Then you will see there is a snap ring that holds the shifter down. That snap ring i bet has come out of the groove and when you shifted you lifted the lever out of the shifting forks. lift the lever out completely so you can see where to drop it back in. After you get it back in the right position squeeze your snap ring into place and you are good to go. That has happened so many times on my 2440 that I am in the habit of pushing down every time I shift it so it does not lift out of place. any time the wife runs the baler for me I remind her not to lift up on that shift lever when putting in gear.

There's a sheet metal type tab(socket) spot welded to the end of the shift rail that gear shift handle slides into. This tab has in a few instances broken of of shift rail. I've seen some repaired by raising shift cover up and re-welding tab on shift rail. If the problem happens to be with the shift forks then the rockshaft housing must be removed to view the forks.

Be sure to block the tires or tie off to another tractor if you're stalled on a hill to avoid rolling backwards out of control.
