I been looking for 2 years 2 months and 8 days... it seems you get to a certain age [ over 60 } and NOBODY wants you ... not a good feeling ... they wouldn't even give you a chance to prove you can do it ...

Boy it's going to feel good to wake up and know you got something to do ...

Congrats and good luck. It"s a good feeling to know that there"s hard work ahead and that you have the opportunity to earn the right to do it. I can only hope that I get to your age and am still capable of earning the right to that.

Get a CDL with a school bus endorsement. I drive a school bus {easy money}. And part-time gravel truck driver. Plus I turn down alot of other odd jobs. And I"m over 60. In Iowa.

Good Luck! I hope it turns out to be a good job and they are happy with you and you with them. A job is a big part of a person's life...I worked for someone else full time 51 years of my life including over 5 1/2 years in the military. I've been retired over 11 years but still miss my work and have occasional dreams about working. Just last night I dreamed I had started a new job and worked a week with quite a bit of overtime and couldn't figure out how to do my timecard....kinda wierd when the truth is I didn't have to punch a time card the last 11 years I worked...did all my time study and allocation on the maintenance department computer and the info. went directly to accounting and payroll. Before that I did punch and make out timecards though....

Could nt pay me to do a school bus driver job now days at least in this area. If a kid misbehaves you can not do much more then kick them off the bus for a week or so and then you get it from the parents etc. But hey my doctor would not let me do it any how but do still have my class A CDL with only 2 things I can not drive and that is haz-mat and school bus all other cars trucks motorcycle etc I am legal in

Go for it. Remember, "Old age and treachery will overcome youth and ambition every time". Show 'em what us older guys can do. I remember when I was about to retire one of the younger employees made some comment about what I was doing(actually re-programming a vision system), like what's that old man think he's doin'. One of the other guys said" You just watch what that old man does!!" Don't let anybody put you down.

The job I had the first 20 years of my life, them old timers taught me a lot. They had ways of repairing and doing things that were not in any book. Now I try to leave something for the younger ones that will help them out some day.

Good for you.................. I have been unemployed for 3 weeks since I was 15 (didn't always make a lot of money or do what I wanted), but know that sooner or later it can hit.. That's when age is scary.....

Best of luck......

Dave

No can not pass a physical any more or at least I do not think I could. Last I heard you have to be able to do things like touch your toes and lift a lot more then I should even think about lifting so I do not think I could get my card again but I will still keep the CDL

Don't know what you are going to be doing... a little story... to encourage you...

Here on my jobsite, I am a resident inspector, I monitor craftsmanship all day long. The Electrical contractor (IBEW) is maxed out on apprentices, (trying to save a buck). The Foremen (2 of em) have "had it"! "Re-do's" are the order of the day...all week long... Just a week ago they brought in an 'old timer' (THUMBS UP). He has 2 of the apprentices with him. Things are getting done and done the first time. He probably wont last because, (1) he doesn't drink, and (2) he knows more than both of the foremen combined, and its making them look bad.
This guy is smooth too, always calm and making every move count. What a blessing to have him around! I shook his hand yesterday and thanked him for doing such a good job and teaching the 'young-in's'.
BTW, he's teaching me too, don't tell anybody :D

I sure do wish you the best of luck. I'm hardly the most or least religious person you or anyone could meet, but I will cross my fingers and say a simple quite prayer for you.

Hard to believe that we are the richest country in the world for natural resources, which includes people in my opinion. Once the world leader at mostly everything, and now, we have good folks such as yourself out of work for years with few prospects for work. I do sincerely wish you luck, but for now, my blood pressure is beginning to raise over yours and others plights, so I'm going to leave for awhile before I get into trouble for saying something very fitting about those boneheads that we keep sending back to washington, because we are boneheads too.

Anyway, much good luck. I'm out of here until I cool off.

I know the feeling oh to well.At the age of 50 I found myself needing a job fortunately I found one after 7 months. The job I found is OK but I've had way better paying jobs. But I'm scared to even talk about leaving this one now at the age of 54 I don't think I would stand a chance at getting a job.Hang in there and I wish you the best for your new hopefully job.

Dutchman,I got tired for working for wages in 1968 or so. After that I made my own job.You cant depend on others.

Dutch,
Congrats! Our generations work ethic is a dying national resource. God help the USA with today's youth.

Whenever my biz gets slow and I try and find a job it is so blatantly obvious the 30 something year old head hunters want nothing to do with me or my resume.
Yet, everyday I see the youth of America spend more time "cruising the net" then working when they are sitting at their desks.
Between Facebook, Twitter, or just plan old online shopping, it amazes me more firms do not limit or outright block these sites.

to add to Pete's comment....
I watch tradesmen work and talk/text (try to) lots! Some of the contractor's crack down, and they should, for abused cell phone use while at work.

I took two of them out to lunch last week, before I sat down (I was last) one of them was on his smart phone. I told him his phone/table manners were as bad as my teenagers. He said he was on his Facebook page updating his wallpaper.... he's 37 yrs old, married w/3 kids.

It's a bad thing going on...

I watched from my office window, a scaffolding company crew remove plasterers staging from the building we're building. Cell phone in hand 90% of the time. He was 18, I asked. I told him that he should put the phone in his pocket and use both hands. He told me that he didn't want to miss any calls. I explained the pitfalls of it all, he shrugged his shoulders. His foreman and were taking about it a week ago. The had told the kid to leave the phone in his car or lunchbox, or to duct tape it to his head.

Looks like the Dutchman will have to become Smart phone savvy to keep up! Dutchman, do you "Twitter"? :?

Been working behind a desk for a long time so took the opportunity to help my brother a couple years ago on a roof. Last time we had done anything like that together was 30 years and no gadgets of distraction... My nephew (his son) was on the roof a little above us and his cell phone kept ringing or beeping for a message. Brother old him a couple times to turn it off and he didn't listen. Few minutes later he was sending a text or something and it slipped out of his hand/slid down the roof in front of my brother. Without looking up or saying a word, he mashed it with his hammer and kept right on nailing.
Dad did the same thing to a radio of our uncle 30 years before. People skills run in the family......
