OT- it just keeps getting worse

As most of you already know, Don was a dud - completely fell apart and nobody got much rain.

Read an article this morning that because of the drought, the salt levels in the gulf waters are so high its killing the oysters and the oyster harvest is expected to be a failure.

The article said 40 inches of rain would be needed north of the gulf to raise the salt level back to normal.

Next tropical depression is forecast to turn north towards Florida and the east coast.

Temps this week are all forecast to be 104 or higher.

The situation is so sad. Here in Minnesota we have had more than enough rain and our humidity and dew points are much higher than is normal if there ever is a "normal". How does this drought compare to what is commonly called the "dirty 30s"?

Don't know. Haven't heard any comparisons. But improved farming techniques should help prevent dust storms.

Forcasting 109 here in Oklahoma. Crows have invaded the irrigation area enjoying the water and deer the Alfalfa.

We used to have some hellacious dust storms around here in west Tx up till the 80's and CRP helped quite a bit. But looking back, kinda makes you ponder which is worse...dust storms or grass fires. Neither one is good.

We feel your pain as your neighbor to the North. Had a 1/2 in of rain last two Sundays ago. Set the record for hottest July in Oklahoma history. A report stated that 70 of 77 counties have been declared an agricultural disaster. Unfortunately no end in sight as this "heat dome" as it is called is not going any where. This week highs to 106 degrees.

I can't recall ever seeing a forecast for 109°.

I've been working around the new place with a cooler full of ice water and a towel. I dip the towel in the water and wear it over my shoulders to keep cool.

For all you folks that have to work in this heat, God bless you.

Yep they are saying it is as bad or worse then the dust bowl days in I think if I remember the 30s. Oh well not much a person can do about it other then hope for the better

When working during summer heat, I wear a T-shirt then a heavy broadcloth shirt over that(but don"t button it closed) to keep the sun off. I dip that heavy shirt in cool water and wear it wet. Keeps me real cool.

Haven"t been able to convince James to do that yet.

it is depressing to say the least. this week forcast is ,110,111,107,,106,104 105 with nights down in the mid 80's. it has been this way for over a month already.

I think we've broken the low temperature record 12 times in the last month. It just doesn't cool off much at night.

Corsicana weather station is reporting 106° right now and it's only noon.

I hope we don't start seeing rolling blackouts. A few hours without power in temps like this would be deadly.

Now that far south of you...mowed at church Saturday with the finish mower...nothing but weeds in the big fields...all gone. Cracks in that gumbo you cannot see the bottom of.
Went to Indiana last month...all I saw was loads of hay going west....

Dad is 82 and is the youngest of his family and he said he's never known it to be this bad out here.

I can't even get my front door to shut now (older brick house & cement slab floor) and a crack has developed over the frame... Its been getting stickier since about March and now will not latch...

I guess the house is settling because it is so dry - I haven't been watering the yard like I did last year...

There is sure a lot of irrigated corn out here that is going down the drain...

Not sure what to think of global warming - and don't want to get into all the "climate vs weather" debate, but if this is truly the wave of the future for this SW part of the US, it sure isn't going to be pretty...

When we lived in south Florida, we noticed that the yard crews that worked out in the heat all day seemed to do okay.
One of our friends was in that business, and I asked him how did they manage.
His reply was that they drank a 50/50 mix of real orange juice and water. Replaces the electrolyte that a person loses from sweating, and isn't salty like Gatorade.

We're about 30 miles west of Corsicana (near Mertens on Highway 22) and dry weather here is legendary.

As a matter of fact (?), when the Good Lord caused it to rain for 40 days and 40 nights....we only got a half an inch !!!
