how are theese things wired ? do all have a relay ? what does the relay do ? where is it at? thanks for the help

Usually no relays involved. Switch on shifter was heavy enough to carry the load. If I remember correctly it just switches power from one terminal to the other for hi and lo. Usually three wires going to the shift unit. Two for power and a ground. Make sure the ground is good.

Old Ford Dump I used to drive, had a connection just ahead of the rear end if you un taped it would get corroded, and green, looks something like a knife switch that interlocked together after cleaning up would work until the next time.

could also be a bad or dirty switch. maybe spray some WD down the shaft on the switch.

What brand of truck and what year? I have worked on dozens and dozens of these things. Some are electric with points-some have micro-switches and circuit boards and some Louisville Fords have a relay. Some are vaccum shift and some are air shift. More info and maybe I can help.Contrary to most beliefs, the motor does not shift the axle,it cocks a spring, and when the pressure is released the spring shifts it.
