O/T Groundhog day in August?

So I was just thinking....how many more days are left in summer? Another week of hot weather slated for this week has me wondering about traditions for predicting summer weather. Do any of you have any rules of thumb which suggest how to predict summer weather?

Christopher

Ya last time I saw the weather report it said 100, 101, 101 and 100 for the first days of this week starting on Monday. As for the long range I do not know but have noticed a few things happening that do not happen most years till later in the summer so that may point to a bad winter or an early fall

Chris,

We have a pretty reliable tradition here in Middle Tennessee. If we look at the calendar and it says August 1, we know that we have at least 60 more days of hot, dry, miserable weather.

If we look at the calendar and it says August 31, we know that we only have at least 30 more days of hot, dry, miserable weather.

It sometimes changes from year to year. There are never any fewer hot, dry, miserable days, but sometimes there are more.

Did I mention that it is hot, dry, and miserable right now? Ya' gotta' love summer in the South.

I just know the birds are flocking up here. Heard them all carrying on like crazy in the trees the other morning. It's not any indicator of how many days til the first frost or anything, just an indicator that summer's winding down.

On that note,I haven't heard any crickets yet. What is it that it's supposed to be,6 weeks after you hear the first cricket til the first frost? Or something like that.

For once have to agree with Old.things are happening(changing)month to 6 weeks too early this year.Neighbor heard a frost forcast of maybe Sept.5th to tenth. That would make this year complete.

Somebody was telling on television a week or so ago that in a 2 year la nina like we have this year, that there have only been 12 recorded, and in 10 of those, the first frost came 5-10 days earlier than average.

I went to an Amish Auction, Saturday, at a whole
valley of Amish farms, and everyone had their oats
shocked. It was so beautiful, and reminded me
of when I was young, and all of the farms
grew and shocked oats, and the community thresh-
ing machine came around. And all of the women
met at different homes to help prepare dinner--
and those threshers dinners--Oh, My, and the
ladys trying to outdo each others with pies and cakes....then back to work..teams pulling wagons
and men walking along side to pitch in bundles.
Our valleys Threshing machine was powered by a
Case DC, and it did a splended job on the belt!
Soon school would start, and Autumn be here.

tennessee dirt farmer,

I live in Maury County, near Columbia (the mule capital of the world), about 40 miles due south of Nashville, just a bit west of I-65.

I used to live in Rhea County, near Dayton, just across the river from you.

Are you doing some kind of farming right now?

I know the town you live in or close to. I did confirmation in Cleveland at a Lutheran church there. At the time I lived in Athens say about 30 miles from Cleveland. Had a broken arm at the time and still remember my stupid brother trying to pass a car on the road between to 2 towns and not being able to make it and driving into a ditch. Can not remember the road number but can remember the pain. Got my first drivers lience (sp) in TN when I was 14
