Question for all

Thursday/this afternoon I'm going to look at an abandoned storage unit who's owner is deceased. It's been sitting for awhile and now the the management needs help cleaning out. My understanding, so far, from a phone conversation is that it is full of equipment from a shoe repair shop. Most of the stuff in the unit is too heavy to move by hand so they want me to use the crane on my truck tomove the equipment and clean it out. My understanding it didn't sell at auction and so now they just want to get rid of it but aren't equipped to do it due to the machine weights. I'm going to at least look at it because I'm figuring even with scrap value on everything I will stand to make a little bit on the deal, and anything worth keeping or selling is just icing on the cake.

That said, one of the items has been described as a buffing machine that's like 8' long, 5' tall, and about 3' deep. Looking online used/reconditioned machines similar to this are going anywhere from $5000 to $12,000 so I'm hoping for a little more than scrap value. Too I was told there are several varieties of sewing machines ($1500 to $5000 plus each depending on type), along with material, and various other benches, shelves, etc, etc.

I've been doing a little research so far and have found a few places that handle used shoe repair equipment, and I've also been thinking there might be a market for people doing other types of leather work as well.

Now, my question. Does anyone know of of any other markets I should look into that might have a use for eqipment like the buffer, industrial sewing machines, etc?

One more question while I'm at it. Does anyone have a clue why the shoe repair equipment companies all seem to take a 'vacation' around the same time? I called two places, one in NY, and another in Canada and got messages at both saying they were completely closed and 'on vacation', one til Aug first, another til the tenth. I saw another just before posting this who's website said they were on vacation the whole month of August........What gives, if all mechanics, farmers, etc took a vacation at the same time nothing would get done....I guess repairing shoes isn't a real high priority, or it simply pays REALLY GOOD to the point that they can all afford to take all that time off.......Like I said, just curious if anyone knows what's going on with this????

Thanks for any info or suggestions. Wayne

Think if it was me, I'd make the deal, then find a shoemaker, saddlemaker, or apholstery shop if there are any still around (maybe Amish?) and tell them you have a bunch of goodies for them to look at and see what they offer. You won't be out anything, maybe even get an offer you are happy with and have em take everything.

Would you want to stick your hand in somebody's work boot right now?? Just guessing....

I wonder if there are any shoe repair/maker forums. There is an online group for just about everything else out there. That might be a good place to put something up for sale.

Good luck, hope you find a buyer. I hate to see good stuff going to scrap.

If you've got a little time, I recommend you look a little further into the shoe repair business. Don't know where you're located (what size town), but my local guy told me his business has never been better and he's hired new help.

Stands to reason that nowadays people are repairing shoes they might have thrown out just a short time ago. Probably somewhere a shoe repair business would be very interested in those machines, but I know how that game works- the day after you give up searching and send them to the scrapper, someone steps forward...

The whole country of Italy shuts down in August.

Maybe haul it all up to Kidron Ohio to the big machinery auctions. Lots of Amish there. Stuff comes in from all over.

Auto upholstery work takes heavy duty sewing. If the buffers can do metal and not just leather then you can sell to car and motorcycle guys. Also sign shops use buffing stands.

Guess I would be surprised if two shoe repair outfits in the same town took vacation at the same time- but I'm guessing that there is seldom more than one in town, and is usually a one man show- so have to close up to go on vacation, and they just pick a time.

I think you got the best leads below already, not so much cobblers, but saddlemakers, harness shops, the buffers are popular with streetrod shops and gunsmiths. IMHO, none of this is junk unless it is 'junk'. Don't scrap it off the bat, try to store it all under cover and do your hunting. Seriously, horsey people are top of the list for leads in the right direction. Good luck!

Google "Auto Soler". An employer I wotked for had one of their achines from the 30's that would sew ANYTHING. Had a picture of a boot on it. The camshaft went bad and we ordered a new one from St. Louis, which they still had. Call them and see what they say-they sell 'rebuilt' machinery and had to get it somewhere.
