51 J. D.eere B mag removal.

Looking for advice on pulling a mag from the tractor.Never done it and dont want to mess something up cause its on a friends tractor. We are mostly possitive that the coil is weak in it. We can start the tractor and it will run great for 20 min. or so doing whatever then it will quit and not restart. I have been through the fuel system(cleaned tank and line, checked and even traded out carbs, and new sediment ball system. Air flow is great at the carb, choke is working properly.
I dont know if there is something Im suppose to mark to make sure things stay in time or any other things I should know. Thanks for your help in advance. Please and thank you.

Pull the cap, mark or remember where the rotor is pointing, then remove the mag, don't turn the engine afterwards.

After you've run the tractor for 20 minutes and it dies, have you checked the spark. I'd do that before I pulled the mag. If no spark, it could be that the coil is getting hot and opening up. Those two cylinders are pretty easy to time.

Possible ignition problems could be a condensor or the coil, make sure its NOT sparking (versus a fuel problem) before you pull the mag. Theres just a top and bottom bolt/nut to be removed to extract the mag, you can easily make a mark on the mag and govenor flange to get her back to the same timing position.

You called it a Mag so I will take you at your word but some B"s used a Wico XB battery powered distributor (looks like a Wico X Mag) ignition ya know.

If you pull the mag do what "cole in mo" suggested as that apply's to most tractors and cars when pulling the mag or distributors. Don't move the engine after the mag is off. Hal
