John Deer Question.

Those that know me on here know that JohnDeer is not something I have ever followed. Now at the favorite watering hole today this fellow says. Hey you are always buying those old tractors, I know where one is you need to check on. His description was 10 series JD sheet metal in a one row high crop. He thought it was one of about 300 ever built. Says I know it to be very rare. He did not know the model but told me where the tractor was sitting. Went buy this afternoon and looked . About 100 yards from the road growed up in weeds but definately is a highcrop like a miniture of a 4020.. Anybody got any ideas and is it rare ? Need to know before I go aproach the widow woman that owns the farm.
Tractor has been sitting outside for 5 to 6 years, exaust was covred but tires looked to be fair and good sheet metal from what I could see.
 
If he doesn"t know the model, how does he know that its one of 300?

There was a 2010 high crop, not sure how many were built. That's more than one row.
 
I think I am going to try and get permission to go on the property and take a look. The guy that told me about it is 80+ years old and his words was I sold it to the guy but can,t think of the model number. He said he bough out a John deer dealer that was goin out of bussiness in 1966 and at the time was told the tractor was very rare. I will let you know what I find.
 
To help your search for info google is your friend. Just be sure to spell it right "Deere"
Maybe you can start by looking at some pictures of a 2010 high crop ? I think that series only had the serial number tag on the right hand side of the engine block. If the engine was ever swapped out then the original tag is likely gone.
If it does not have a serial tag then it will really lower the value.
 
Ya know , he did say he got this info "at the local watering hole" so might not want to try to make "sense" of it.
