How to find someone to paint my tractor

I have a 4010 deere that was the wife's grandfathers. Its been sitting outside in the the SW corner of KS outside and the original paint is burnt through and oxidized off. Its pretty straight and mechanically runs good. I just want to preserve it so it don't rust on me that I got it in the midwest. Just need a new set of working clothes for it, not a fancy restoration, I will be using it on my little farm not a parade queen. I am in mid missouri. any suggestions on how to find someone to do this?

You can try any small type body shop, not a chain owned one, but locally owned. Ask at two or three and by then someone should be able to point you in the right direction, or, the cheaper and better option would be to just look in the mirror. :)

Yea, if you can find that elusive rountuit, I've seen real decent jobs done with a brush and roller........... Got everything to do mine except the rountuit.......

If you really want to do it right, & dont mind the cost? Try a JD Dealer. I had one repainted years ago by the local dealer, & they painted everything inside, & out. The serviceman said if your trying to stop corrosion you have to paint both sides of whatever your painting. If you just want it to look nice; then thats another story!

Go to a local tractor show and see what's there and ask around who painted what.

Was just at a very nice Oliver show here at Wooster Ohio fairgrounds and several tractors even had the name of the restorer's on them who were not the owners.

Your tractor probably needs to be steam cleaned or power washed. Then it would need to be sandblasted to remove the old paint and rust.
There's a man in OH that does tractors. They probably look better than when new when he does one. Here's one of his tractor's sandblasted and painted. Hal

Go to a small locally owned garage and ask if they do paint jobs. Odds are they do not but will point you in the right direction. These tradesmen are kind of a community sending one another work.
When you do do talk to someone thay does paint jobs you might ask for pictutes of past work so you know what knid of work he does.

Yep just did the B farmall-pressure wash, sand , wire brush, oven cleaner, right paint, and take time-not perfect but will be a work tractor as well

time permitting>>>>> do it yourself. its not hard....alot of beer and patience! you have this site for ideas and advice.

If you decide to do it yourself, and it isn't that hard, especially if you are just looking for a decent job you can't go wrong with John Deere paint. Get the hardener and reducer from them also. It is a basic old fashioned synthetic enamel and not hard to use. I'm not an experien ced painter, but I have done four of them with it. The oldest has been painted for over 25 years and is a "using" tractor. It's a bit faded but the paint is still doing its job protecting the metal. You probably already have a compressor and you can get a cheap gun for under $50. If you don't like it you can sand it off and you won't be out much. The work is all in the prep.

" I just want to preserve it so it don't rust on me" ....for how long? That's the question you will have to answer to anyone you hire to do it for you. That's what will decide how extensive the prep will be and how expensive the job will be. On the other hand , if you do it yourself it will be cheaper and then when you see rust in a year or two you will live with it. Bottom line is , if you pay it done you will expect some what of a warrantee and they need to know ahead of time EXACTLY how long that is so they know how to prep and what to charge. Probably a no-win situation so best do it yourself.
